Hi Guys/Gals

I just recently got an adsl line installed. I'm on the Telkom 3 month free trial. I was wondering what exactly news servers are and how do they work. I'm also about to get the MWEB 3 month free promotion. Do you guys reckon its good value for money.

Don't expect too much from Mweb's news servers, especially for older content.

For downloading stuff off news servers you'll need 3 things:
  1. A news server to download from.
Most of the big SA ISP's have news servers, which are restricted to their clients only, but they're all free with no username or password and on the default unencrypted TCP port 119: news.mweb.co.za, news.is.co.za, news.saix.net, news.cybersmart.co.za, news.wa.co.za
You then get subscription based news servers like Astraweb, Giganews, and a few others that I don't know. These subscription based news servers usually offer the content for way longer than the free servers, and they also offer faster download speeds.
For downloading series on a 1Mbps line, the Mweb servers should be fine if you're downloading at night.
  2. An indexing site to download the .nzb files from
I would recommend nzbmatrix.com, where you can register for free, but then you're only allowed to download the .nzb files in zipped format, which I prefer in any case
  3. A NZB client.
For Windows I'd recommend Alt.Binz, and for Linux I'd recommend SABnzbd+, which gives you a web interface. You get quite a few addons which works very nicely with SABnzbd+, like Sickbeard.

free news servers is a waste of time - too unreliable and so slow.
