Newsgroups and the likes thereof!

I last used newsgroups about 15 years ago..... sometime when I was using mirc..... Anyhow, I moved on.......

Recently , due to me being an esteemed member of this here forum, I noticed that a lot of you keep referring to Newsgroups/Usenet....... So I googled around a bit and see they all require your to sign up for a small fee, where as back in the day it was all free..... I think I used a program called Free Agent back then,

What gives? Are there no more free services out there? Are newsgroups growing again? What are you guys using them for mostly?

Newsgroups have become a new popular was to download "linux distributions".
basically some clever fool came across an old internet protocol and went, wait... these things aren't logged, because back in the day nobody cared who read what news articles.

and then that crazy fool went on and said if i make a "news" channel and call it "Red Hat v1" and I then have sub channels each called "redhat.rar", "redhat.ra1", etc and then the articles in each sub channel are the file contents.

I can "download" the files by reading all the articles in the sub channel. once I've read all the articles in all the sub channels of my "Red Hat v1" news channel, I've effectively downloaded my brand new linux distribution!

Most ISPs have free new servers, but people use paid ones for redundancy and better retention. People use them for pirated movies, tv series and games.
 
News servers are used by various criminals... especially the sort of crime that raises strong responses from the membership of this forum.

As for it not being monitored, I don't think so... Big Brother can and probably does monitor that too. Many packet inspection tools can see inside a rar file. DUH!

Can they see inside an ssl connection done through an ssl vpn?
