Hi All

Does anyone know if the news.is.co.za newsserver is accessible from an ADSL account. I hear that even if you sign up with IS (ADSL not regular dial-up) you get redirected to the SAIX news server . Is this correct?

Thanks

blew out when i tried of adsl line but then i dont know what the jimmy it was meant to do....do i need to be subscribed?

Welcome to MyADSL by the way - good to have you onboard.

Well on dialup you cant access the IS newsserver unless you have an "IS" dial-up account. If anyone wants to test for me just open up any newsreader (Outlook Express has one) and point it to news.is.co.za port 119. Would be interested to know who can retrive list of groups.

Thanks

uh

news.is.co.za works fine from ISadsl...
I wish I could connect to news.infosat.co.za, that server kept all the posts, so you could really leech with that. :(

Tinuva, news.is.co.za has great retention and a huge number of groups and articles. Please can you ping and confirm that you are not being redirected.

PING news.is.co.za (168.209.98.66) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from netcache5.is.co.za (168.209.98.66): icmp_seq=0 ttl=250 time=25.8 ms

64 bytes from netcache5.is.co.za (168.209.98.66): icmp_seq=2 ttl=250 time=6.73 ms

telnet news.is.co.za 119
Trying 168.209.98.66...
Connected to news.is.co.za.

200 Welcome to news.is.co.za. Users connecting to this server do so at their own
risk. IS is unable to and does not at any time exercise editorial control of an
y content posted on this infrastructure. http://www.is.co.za/aup

Thanks

Sorry I didnt do a complete overview of that server, just checked that I could connect.

It indeed is IS's news server, have a crapload stuff on, complete files in the binaries groups. By the looks of it there was full dvds and so on, on that server. It also traceroute to netcache5. But let me just inform you, from other isps it might also traceroute to that server, but once you make a connection to port 119 it might redirect you somewhere else.

Anyhow im looking for something similar to newsleecher, but something that doesnt use a subscription based payment method (heck i dont wanna pay money every year, or second year for a little piece of crap software).

Something with a once off fee or something opensource would be nice.

Grabit is your friend (www.shemes.com) ....Heck if you can connect to news.is.co.za then I'm gonna have to get adsl...Its all local traffic :D :D and there is tons of goodies their

So which ISP do I go with..? Who resells ISDSL or can I sign up directly with IS. Tinuva who are you using?

I can't seem to connect from my SAIX account, pings alright though.

slip.

I am with www.intdev.co.za (really good service)
They ask R250/month but ask R200 setup fee 1st month.

Or you could go with www.eastcoast.co.za (I found them after i signed up with intdev) R250/month

Those 2 are the cheapest ISadsl resellers.

Notice that ISadsl is still in beta, and not really meant for the public (but that is not gonna stop you)

Sometimes I still get a good speed after cap international, but I can always browse (sometimes at 33.6k speeds but that is WAY better than telkom adsl)

Local is still 100% speed after cap, for now.

Good luck.

last note, i got full speed from that news.is.co.za, its damned fast.

jeez this grabit works like a bomb. infact, the seach function even works, never worked with newsleecher. and its actually quite easy to use. I like

Thanks for suggesting it!

I have the same problem, cannot connect with Datapro/SAIX account.

I'm newbie to news servers....any help appreciated!

You wont be able to connect from SAIX account. Try news.saix.co.za. Not sure what the article retention and group count is like though.

As mentioned, I'm new to news servers...........so....I'm connected now, but it seems that all of the articles is just messagesn on news.saix.co.za.......aren't there anything to download, maybe a few tips.

I'm using GrabIt. When I use GrabIt search, it search on Usenet, which has alot of stuff e.g. pics, .zip, rar etc., but obviously I cannot download from Usenet and it gives me a "article not found".

Using the search to search on SAIX's server, only gives messages, or do I realy have to go through a few hundred to find a download..one by one.

Is the main purpose of most news servers only 'messages/posts', ...or in SAIX's case anyway?

Thanks!

Well see, that is the problem with the SAIX news server, they delete any posts that is only files. That is why you wont really get anything usefull from that server, and why the news.is.co.za is so nice, it keeps ALL the file posts for up to 42days (maybe more).

If you really wanna use this to download with, I would suggest you move to an ISadsl based isp. There is other options, but that cost more money and connecting to international news servers (they have 1.5gb limits per payment what i saw).

I'm with Datapro currently (SAIX based), which only gave me excellent service so far (or died trying). I don't realy want to leave them, but if I can get access to the ISadsl news server and all is good local bandwith........shoe......it's a difficult one.

Any other advantages ISadsl has.......maybe advanced userstats monitoring, similar to Telkom's ADSL users?

userstats look like those from the general tab on userstats.adsl.saix.net...
it doesnt have the page with all the ips you had ect., but you can see up and down and total bw for the month, and for every day. After cap you are suppose to have still 10% of your line speed for international (aka 6k/s int). I can say that after cap i can still browse, just slower, right now its disabled and i have full speed international. They have their own connection to international, and feel more consistant in stability than saix. I dont notice any shaping b4 cap ect ect. Well you have to test them out before you will actually know.
