Hey guys

One of my friends gave his 80Gb NexStar USB external HDD to me today to put Delphi (software) and some other stuff like music on. I copied the first bunch of stuff, but when selecting a few other files and trying to paste them to the drive, it said that it was an invalid MSdos function (or application, can't remember). Oh and just before that this Symantec Endpoint blocked some NT service thing. I then removed the HDD and put it back in. All of a sudden the disc would not show up in My computer anymore! It span all the time but nothing, not even "unrecognized device" showed up, but the disc was spinning.

So I went to device manager and uninstalled and reinstalled it again. Now when I got to Disc management under Administrative tools it says that I must initialize the disc before the Logical disc manager can access it. When I try that it says "Invalid function". This a USB powered 2.5" drive, but my normal AC powered external still works. But when I plug the 80Gb in now it only spins for a few seconds and then goes slower like it usually did.

What can be wrong, there is no important data on so don't worry about that, All I need is the thing to work again. And it doesn't sound weird (like make noises) or anything, so I doubt it is hardware. I am running Win 7 Enterprise BTW.

Thanx for any help, it is GREATLY appreciated!!!

This must be something contagious. What is it with USB devices lately???

Maybe this will help. Enduring similar frustrations with an external HDD myself

Thanx a lot, I am very relieved, it is working again :D

On the other side though I think I am about to reveal that I have just had one of the blondest moments ever, not sure though. You know this thing is USB powered so it has 2 USB plugs? Should you first plug the cable into the HDD and then the two USB's into the PC or first put the 2 USB's in the PC and then the mini USB in the HDD?

Because all of a sudden when I first took out the cable from the drive and put the 2 USB's in the the PC's ports and then the cable back into the drive, then it works.
