After reading the LOTRO vs WoW debate (and realising WoW is still much better); this came to me:

Any ideas about what the next big MMORPG might be? Vanguard failed terribly, and I have heard rumours about Warhammer adding something completely new to the genre in the form of its next gen RvR.

Comments?

MMPORG's are known for their staying power. So I doubt WoW would be trumped anytime soon due to their dynamic content updates etc. Ultima Online was the **** a few years back (96-??) but lost their advantage because they didn't update as much I think.

Plus, Blizzard can pre-sell 1 million copies of their game

True, but Ultima did vanish - so its not inconceivable that WoW might follow suite IF something completely overwhelming comes along. To lure ppl away you would need something completely mind blowing and new tho.

I would say it needs to be something that has drilled it's way into our lives like the Warcraft Strategy games did.

It already started the Horde vs Alliance part of the scene.

Maybe something Like Starcraft ?
Comand and Conquer ?

The foundation for those have been layed and can make it rather good as a MMORPG

Just an idea or a wild guess :o

I played Ultima Online for many years...

It was blown away by Everquest .... that lasted 5 yrs for me

I tried DAOC for a while, then EQ2

There was AO as well that did quite well.

Now I am stuck on WoW.

I think Blizz will release a few more expansions that will keep ppl there for a while to come (at 8.5mil subs, I think the fade of the game will be more gradual)

Eventually something will come along and take top spot for a while, and so the cycle will go on.

Blizz marketed WoW extensively and when I look and LOTR, I did not see as much hype as WoW. Even though I am a LOTR fan, I have not decided to get it as it hasn't been marketed in my face like WoW was.

Pit, there is a site called www.mmorpg.com You can see the whats hot and up coming and whats not. If you decide to get something new, let us know and maybe we will join you =)

warhammer has been tipped to knock of WOW from the top spot,Alot of wow addicts might move to this as its Char classes/game functions and world are better than WOW.

there is also Age of Conan coming out in the next couple months which has a arcade style game fighting setup,Its not a simple click and leave auto attack on.You need to use fighting moves/combos similar to games like Mortal combat and Street fighter.Thats where the xbox 360 comes in with its controls and joystick functions as AOC will be release on both PC and 360.AOC will also implement battles for its PVP,You can setup a strongold with your guild in the bundu's somewhere and a Rival guild or guilds can mass a army and attack your stronghold,Catapults,Siege wepons and many more wepons of mass destruction can be used in these events.Your army can either be AI controlled ( if no guildies are online) and or your guildes can lead a group of solders ( PC or human controlled) in defending or attacking anothers castle/stronghold bla bla.

These battle will be HUGE and unless you running a really powerful internet line you will lag completley out.

PVE will be similar to wow,Run around and quest and lvl up.

I wonder where Diablo 3 will fit in?

There were rumor on the net that the next title for the diablo series will be called " the search for Dekard cain" (spelling)

But they were pretty much squashed by Blizz.

The Team that made diablo (Blizz north)what it is today is the Team making hellgate london,If you look at Hellgate london its basically setup very similar to diablo and that particular style of gameplay. The only thing that drew me to diablo was been able to bounce back and fourth between difficulty lvls and do things like magic find or boss runs.I dunno if they have implemented this in hellgate.

In testing its graphics engine for hellgate london the team made a side game which is a MMO game just like diablohttp://www.mythos.com/...its totally free aswell.

Personally I don't think there's any title currently under development that will knock Wow.

Warhammer's creators already said that they know they won't make a dent in Wow.

Age of Conan looks too 1st persony to me. I'm not gonna get involved in a 1st person shooter with a ping of 500 and up.

My brother is on a bout this Hellgate London. I havn't seen it, so we'll see.
