Hi guys I was looking at buying a ps4 or an Xbox one but the main reason I'm holding off is that I heard that they need updates before you can play and I don't have uncapped adsl at my house, so the question I'm asking is should I get a next gen console? How big are the day 1 updates? and how regularly do they need updating? or should I stick with my ps3

If you are referring to the PS4 firmware, it is not huge.
I guess it is about 380MB, but it is really a guess. It is easy to check the size, just Google.

You can ask someone to download it for you or maybe at work, if you are allowed. You can then put it on a flash drive and update your PS4 that way.

That said, the PS4 depends heavily on an Internet connection and without bandwidth galore, you are going to struggle.

Xbox update is just shy of 500mb. Other updates usually once every 2 months are 250mb. Game updates will be your biggest pain in the butt.

Xbox needs Internet as much if not worse than the XBone.

Xbone game updates are a real pain in the @ss.

Earlier this week I got Lords o the fallen. Stick disc in and a 4GB update had to be done.
For Christmas I gave my son Assassins Creed Unity and Sunset Overdrive. 6GB and 2GB updates respectively.

Awesome console, but these constant game updates are annoying.

That's nothing to the 50GB halo master chief collection update.

PS4 is the same, also a lot of updates and many of them are big and obviously if you are buying digital downloads, you are really in for some pain.

I'm looking at GTA V atm and it is a 45GB download on a 4Mbps line.

Can't you install from disc and just update the rest?
Nice thing about the Xbone is that you can copy the game from a friend and you just buy a licence digitally. If only u had friends though :(

Not sure tbh.

PS4 fw updates are usually only 250MB

Updates for games you really don't need. I'm playing AC Unity and I only downloaded patch 2 which was 3.7GB. Its not mandatory though. Perhaps for online play.

Definitely for online games. Most are not optional updates if you want to play online/multi-player.

Especially the MMO games have frequent updates that run 10GB or more. Some of the updates are incremental and can then be smaller.

Basically if you don't you don't need to play online you don't need to do all the updates. If you want to play online better get better internet.

Jip, that sums it up.

Such a nice piece of equipment though. If you can, get uncapped or a capped account.

The party chat and Share Play are such nice features.
I understand that most people can't get Share Play to work, but it works for us.

I have 2 PS4's on my LAN.

Just an FYI: It's pretty silly to still call Xbone and PS4 "Next Generation". They are now referred to as current gen. Both consoles have now been out for a full year.

Just a pet peeve of mine.

And that's why pre-loading content before release is a godsend.
Doesn't anyways work though.
I purchased Advanced Warfare 2 weeks before release date and started the 48GB download.
It completed, and the game widget showed "install". Odd, as it should have installed.
Anyway, I selected Install. It proceeded to download the entire thing again.

On launch day, it would not work. I eventually got fed up. Got a refund from MS and went out and purchased the disc from BT.

Stuck the disc in and got hit with an update. Sigh...

Worst is - I am not playing the game.

Moral of the story - buy on PC next time.

My bad - was talking about Xbone.
I used to be a PC gamer. Does not fit it with my lifestyle anymore, so moved to console a few years back. Can't use a keyboard / mouse in my game room.
For me - PC is for strategy games.

That said - I am planning on building a steam machine for my game room. But playing with a controller. I don't do the keyboard/mouse thing anymore - except for strategy games.

Yeah remember that issue with COD :(
Exact reason I bought Halo:MCE and just dl'd the update. Anything over 40gbs gets bought on disc first and I'll sell on carb for a slight knock.
