Just got back into SA a few days ago and my wife bought a new micro sim card (payg) from Vodacom. On putting it into her Nexus 5, we're told that: Selected Network (VodaCom-SA) unavailable.

We've tried various things like changing the preffered connection method (from LTE, to 3G etc.) with no luck.

When i take her sim and put it into my Nexus 4, it works perfectly. Neither of these phones are network locked.

Could someone please help us to get this to work properly on the Nexus 5??

Thanks!

Have you figured this out? I am having the same issue. (Nexus 5 World version LGD821)

Try looking for the answer here when reading the operating frequencies namely;
2G Network GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 - all versions
CDMA 800 / 1900 - North America version
3G Network HSDPA 800 / 850 / 1700 / 1900 / 2100 / 900 - North America version
HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1700 / 1900 / 2100
4G Network LTE 700 / 800 / 850 / 1700 / 1900 / 2100 / 2600 - North America version
LTE 800 / 850 / 900 / 1800 / 2100 / 2600

Vodacom uses the following
GSM 900, 1800
UMTS 2100
What are you trying to say? It would seem that the phone is fine for Vodacom

This is not something I want to read with my Nexus 5 arriving this coming weekend :|

"What are you trying to say" = A starting point to trouble shoot and by the way Vodacom also uses 1800Mhz for LTE mode. A general principal of trouble shooting is use a process of elimination starting at ie. operating frequencies and then the other ones.:D

The lesson to be learnt with using phones/modems originating from outside the RSA is apply Caveat Emptor by looking at the operational frequencies to start with before sending payment etc.

That is very general. To bring it back into context in terms of the Nexus 5, I don't see a problem with the phone in the Vodacom network. Yet you listed frequencies the phone is capable of which includes those of Vodacom. What an I missing here? And more to the point, why is the OP struggling with connection?

OGroteKoning we can go on and on about the merits of the original OP posting and still not resolve the issue, why because the OP did not state if his Nexus 5 originated from a local source. It was presumed that his Nexus 5 was imported thus my general observation of operating frequencies is DUELY VALID - Cheers. In the FINAL analyse - The original OP should contact VodacomData to assist in resolving this problem

These phones are not available locally. This imported with the frequencies as you stated as it is for the US model. The frequencies would seem fine for Vodacom.

The final comment - The freq might be the same but this is only one of many technological factors ie. our GSM Voice service which differs from country to country. In final comment to this topic - WILL "Markd" please contact VodacomData to resolve his/her Nexus 5 problem. Cheers OGroteKoning with my seasons greetings to you.

You have no idea on how GSM infrastructure works, do you? They are set as standards for a reason.

OP, you need to provide more information:
Where was the Nexus 5 bought? Which carrier was she using it on before? Have you tried another local operator (Cell C, MTN, Telkom Mobile)?

The OP's problem might be with the phone itself, rather than Voda, so I'd agree with what Maverick Jester says just above - try with other SIM cards and see if that works. My N5 is working perfectly on Vodacom, for what it's worth. (USA model).

Was the OP able to resolve this? As I seem to be in the same situation. Nexus 5 UK model + Vodacom and it just doesn't pick up the network :(

EDIT:

After some playing it looks like it's the LTE network that's giving me grief. If I change down to 3G, set the APN to "internet" and restart then it's able to pick up the Vodacom network.

Gonna have to play around some more I think. One of the reasons I got the UK model was because I thought the LTE was compatible.

EDIT #2:

Turned out my sim wasn't registered on the Vodacom LTE APN. So a quick phone call to Vodacom this morning and everything is now working :)
