I'm venturing back into the Android land, I know with Android its all about specs so between these two which would be a better buy? Also if another phone is in this price range feel free to include it.

Also is 16gb storage enough? I'm not an app or games guy.

To the custom rom guys, I know a Nexus is fairly easy to load a custom rom and everything still works, is it the same with Huawei or do things break like they would if you went with a custom rom on a Samsung.

My Option...
5x vs P9 = 5x
Storage = Since this varies from person to person... Look at the storage usage of your current phone. This should give you a indicator whether a 16GB phone will be ok, of if you should opt for a 32GB model
Custom roms = 5x, one of the main points of going for the Nexus range is to get stock android directly from Google and to receive secure updates as they are released. With out needing to wait on a phone vendor to port it or expose yourself to custom roms that may have a embedded trojan in it.

Coming from Windows Phone :D
I only use apps that are needed, 4chan, 9gag, Dropbox, Evernote, Facebook, Skype, Slack, Speedtest, Spotify, Teamviewer, Twitter, VLC, WhatsApp, Wunderlist, Yammer, Zapper and the Office apps.

I'm not a person who takes out pictures often but since these phones have a much higher megapixel than I'm used too will I have enough free space? I don't keep music or movies on my phone.

Hey man, the 16GB should be okay for you seeing as you only want a couple of apps on it. Although it might be a little low after each app creates it's own cache, databases and similar things. If you're syncing files on Dropbox and the Office apps then I would opt for the 32GB model or get an OTG flash drive to store those files.

Files are for viewing when necessary. I have an uncapped data connection so cloud storage is fine.
