Nexus 7 2012 3G Rom recommendation

My 2012 Nexus 7 3G has slowed down so much its quicker to walk to a PC and check my email than open the gmail app on the thing.

Can someone recommend a decent rom? I thought if I'm going to clear out the stock rom - I might as well "upgrade".

(I've tried clearing the cache a few times, didnt help)

Stock isn't slow, look at what's eating your resources.

Ah - ok - done that before - hardly anything running, and slow. The thing has almost continues lag.

Only apps reported at the moment are four google services, one Exchange Services. Try run any app - and lag.

Are you on kitkat? Backup and do a factory reset?

Yes, but that just puts me back where I was? I don't want to be clearing the cache every week or two.

Seems odd, anyway try slimkat I think it's called. It's a light rom.

Perhaps see if you can reinstall it and have the internal storage formatted to F2FS? Seems to have fixed a lot of issues with that device.

Use a smaller gapps package.
