Hi all,

Accidentally stepped on the screen of my 2012 Nexus 7" tablet, and it's got a few cracks right through the middle. The display seems fine, but the touch digitiser around the crack is flakey. Anyone know where I can get a quote to have it fixed in Somerset West / greater Cape Town area?
Incredible Connection wants to send it away for 2 weeks for a quote, and they want R450 for their efforts...

Thanks,
Theodor

As far as I know, the digitizer and screen is one unit. You can't replace the one without the other. It's probably going to be cheaper and less trouble to buy a new one, from what I've heard. I might be wrong though.

Do you have a 'China Mall' in Capetown?
The Pakistani guys there will usually repair at good price, but try and bargain for lower

Thanks for the commiserations! We don't have a China Mall here unfortunately.
The insurance will probably pay, but they want a quote first.

Holy crap, you had a Nexus 7 a year before they even existed? That's awesome.

Cellphone shops should be able to help you from what I know. Or maybe phone Asus.

Yeah my son has just done exactly the same with his, took it out of the cover and dropped it.
Lemme know how much it costs if you get a chance as am going to the US at the end of October and might just get him to buy a new one if it ends up being too expensive to repair ...

Hi,

Try this guy, he's in Bellville I think, [email protected] (Hugo van Niekerk), Company is called The IT Illusionist (Pty) Ltd, quoted me R900 to replace the LCD and digitizer, I haven't had a chance to get to him yet but he seems the best bet I've found.

Or

HK Computers (quoted just under R1000 but didn't have stock or ETA)

Shop 1 Tygerberg Sentrum
16 Voortrekker Road
Bellville, WC, RSA 7530

Phone: 086-722-776-4 or 021 948 4635

Hope this helps,

Shaheen

Hi All

I bought a Nexus 7 last year and one morning last week I discovered a crack in the screen and the device was unusable since the digitiser was also broken. I have no idea how this happened. I use it a lot but it didn't fall or anything like that.

I tried to contact one or to places that I found online and recommended by friends but got no response.

I sent Hugo an email but only got a response after I already took my Nexus to HK Computers. Hugo quoted me R1600.

HK Computers fixed my Nexus, also for R1600 but not without a few hick-ups.

The first screen they installed had two vertical lines that was clearly faulty. I had to put up a fight to get them to install a new one.
They insist that they install genuine parts. Realistically I don't think anyone can have genuine parts readily available and Hugo also said these parts are not available in South Africa.
The plastic of the Nexus right next to the screen is slightly chipped and scratched and my power button sticks out less than it used to.

The people at HK Computers are friendly, attentive to customer satisfaction and provide quick service. I don't mean to talk them down, only to tell the story.

Good luck!

Sonja

What Nexus 7 do you have?
IMO R1600 would be way to much to spend on fixing a 1st gen Nexus 7 wifi.

Hi
i have the nexus 7 Tablet ME370T, screen cracked i am looking for a place to buy the Digitiser and LCD i would like to attempt the job myself. Where can i buy the Screen? Please i will appreciate the help and advice.

Make sure, if you are going to order from Ebay that you order the complete unit. Do NOT order the LCD and Digitizer separately as they cannot be put together without bubbles. Think of it like putting on a plastic screen protector. How many of you have gotten that right?
Also, order a LCD screen flex ribbon whilst you're at it. They are incredibly fragile and break easily. If you don't use it you wasted R20. You don't get one and break your existing one you will regret not spending that R20...
I am situated in Parow, Northern Suburbs of Cape Town. If you have the pieces but feel nervous about putting them on successfully I will do it for you for a couple of hundred bucks. I will give you a quote first so you don't have a heart attack - price all depends on how badly your Nexus 7 was "graunched". Was it a gentlemany tap resulting in a crack? Or did you drop it getting into the car and drive over it? :D
Give me a call 073-719-2258 Colin

I second the ribbon cable idea. I redid my screen, I can't see the ribbon broken, but by process of elimination its the only thing that could be preventing me from using my tablet now
