As it turns out the Nexus one is not selling too wildly at the moment. A sales tracking firm pegged the Google phone branded as Nexus One at around only 20 000 units sold its first week on the shelves. In comparison the Motorola DROID sold 250 000 units in the first week but that was just before Christmas 2009. The Nexus One is being released after Christmas and at a time where many people cannot make expensive purchase decisions.

The iPhone 3GS which was released middle last year sold close to 2 000 000 phones in its first week! That is just amazing! I am personally very keen to get my hands on a Nexus One sometime and would also like to know what the thinking is behind its marketing by Google. What are they planning for it? Is this after Christmas release a deliberate action for some weird reason?

In the words of the company that did the sales analysis, “While Flurry estimates that Nexus One was outsold by Droid by more than 12 times, myTouch 3G by 3 times and iPhone 3GS by a staggering 80 times, it’s worth noting there are significant differences in the marketing, distribution and perception of the device as revolutionary vs. evolutionary. In short, key business decisions and other factors related to the Nexus One launch make an “apples-to-apples” comparison difficult.

As a product, the Nexus One boasts the most advanced Android OS to date as well as unique features, such as Google Voice and Google Maps. However, potentially due to the heightened “promise” created by early buzz, the handset has ultimately fallen short on sales expectations. Without the “wow factor” now expected with each new challenger to the iPhone, especially the first smartphone with Google’s own branding, demand generation has been modest.”
