Nexus S Cyanogen 9

My first experience with a custom rom was terrible, phone ended up at vodacom for 3 weeks after being brick blocked.

Going to give it another try, just want to see if anyone has experience with the new Cyanogen, its said to be almost there.

Ended up taking the plunge and doing it anyway, IMO its near perfect.

Runs very smooth, only problems i have is calendar sync does not work, not sure if the latest releases have fixed it, im on A11 and they pushed out A13 yesterday. On first boot the default keyboard is the Chinese one which is not actually there i assume as it never appears, switching to android will sort out that.

ICS is a little ram heavy compared to gingebread so i am no longer able to use SPShell3D, it takes up 90mb+ ram so i end up with about 30mb free with it running so its the first app to get flushed out when ram is needed meaning constant reloads, cant say anything for other launchers but teh stock on is pretty decent, you can swap your 4 tray icons out for anything you want, folder can be created automatically, just hover a new icon over an existing one and it will dump them into a folder.

No longer uses long press to add widgets, thats under your menu in a tab next to your applications, also sliding is left<>right an no longer up<>down, face unlock however does not like my face... LOL

Nice one I was hoping memory use would actually be less with ICS... but maybe they are still working on that.

Official release for CM9 I believe will only be around late Jan/Feb, so there is some way to go.

With all the new features its unlikely it will be less. Does not seem to be too much more.

SPShell3D just uses close on 100mb in the latest release, the older ones worked better as it has less useless features, but even before the upgrade i noticed a lot more reloading of the UI than before the last 2 updates.
A single app using that much ram is bound to get flushed every now and then, before CM9 with a stock 2.3.4 i used to hang around 50mb free with all the same apps so its only 30-35mb less but it makes a difference when you launch new apps.

Not sure how much ram a nexus s has but i got 345mb available for apps so the rest must be in use by the OS.
If you have a nexus s then you can actually just check how much you have for apps and then we can see what the extra usage would actually be.

Sorry man... I have a Moto Defy and my memory usage with CM7.1 is generally on about 140mb

Usage would of been easy enough to figure out, just dont actually know how much ram a nexus s has

Ok google search revealed 512mb dedicated ram so its about 160mb for cm9
