So i'm playing around with my new Lumia 720 (what an incredible device) and i'm wondering what's involved in using it as a payment method?

I read some news online from a while back that ABSA was rolling out NFC payment terminals (did they, or any other banks?), and being new to Windows Phone 8 and NFC, I was wondering how popular NFC payments are, and if it is around, what I need to do to configure my phone to take advantage of NFC payments.

Any advice for a new Lumia owner?

NFC is great overseas for payments (wave your phone or NFC chipped card over the device) and any form of ticketing. This will take forever to be adopted here - still cringing when stores force you to sign a chip+pin transaction.

:erm: Gautrain, MyCiti, Rea Vaya all use NFC. Standard Bank apparently already has some sort of active NFC system in place.

Never used NFC on my 9790 apart from sending a business card to my wifes 9790 to test it out.

Lots of different ways to pay but cash is king.

Don't know if any have apps, but they all use NFC technology :)

Ah okay, looks like it was introduced to use on cards. I wonder if the mobile phone NFC is working?

Aconite Technology Ltd. and Traderoot Africa (Pty) Ltd., its partner in South Africa, are working together to supply a prepaid contactless chip card system for South Africa’s new integrated public transit network.
The project, scheduled to go live this summer, will enable public taxi-bus riders to purchase tickets using contactless smart cards or, potentially, NFC-enabled mobile phones.
According to Aconite, replacing cash with smart cards will reduce costs while mitigating fraud and theft, as well as speed up the fare transaction process.
For the system, Aconite will provide its Prepaid Value Manager software to Traderoot for integration into Traderoot’s Universal Prepaid Issuing Platform (UPIP) product.
The system can manage closed or open-loop smart prepaid/pre-authorized payment products that may be accepted in offline and/or online point-of-sale terminals.
According to Aconite, a smart prepaid/pre-authorized system, which can be used in offline terminals, is ideal in places where online authorization is either impractical, uneconomic, unreliable or non-existent.
The initial pilot launch will deploy 50,000 cards, after which card numbers are expected rise to 800,000 within 12 months and 2,000,000 in 24 months as the solution is rolled out to all elements of the integrated mass transit network.

Well cards help me not worry about carrying cash 95% of the time... now i'm hoping to be able to start leaving the wallet at home when going shopping. I also often forget my wallet somewhere (like the gf's car), and it would be nice to be able to transact without it.

What about drivers license/MA details?

That would be something to consider. Thinking about it though:

1. If I've left my wallet in the gf's car, i'm still going to drive to the shops. If I get a ticket, so be it. In the last 12 years of driving I've been asked for a license about 5 times, all of which were on open road road blocks. In those cases there is other identifiable information that you will have on you, and you pay a fine.

Also... I could leave the drivers license in the car permanently... that way it's alway in the car in any case?

2. I'm generally going to have my wallet on me if i'm traveling more than a few km from home as i'd want to have cash on me in any case... so you can rule out the open road road blocks above... especially if I leave the license in the car.
3. I'm not always driving (may be on foot in town / out with gf in her car on occasion)
4. As BRT etc become more popular, driving will become less so.

The list goes on... but there are plenty of reasons why it would still be useful. I'd still want to have my wallet on me in most situations, more because I feel somewhat lost without it... like something is missing.
