Hi All
NHI feedback is now open and can be emailed to [email protected]
I sent my feedback yesterday and encourage all of you to do the same. This is my message to them:
Good day
There are certain key pillars that are required for an economy to function. If any of those pillars are broken the middle class will leave the country collapsing the economy.
Those pillars are:
Protection of property rights
The ability to be employed
Quality education
Safety
Decent healthcare
History has unequivocally shown that if any of these are unavailable economic collapse and hardship follow. Already most of these areas are severely threatened by ineffective policy, corruption, and incompetence. The proposed NHI will break middle class healthcare and as such will destroy South Africa’s economy. You cannot forcefully put the 10% of taxpaying people in SA onto NHI to subsidize the 90% who do not contribute meaningful tax and expect the 10% to remain when they are getting 90% less for their money. While decent healthcare for all South Africans is absolutely needed and something I greatly desire to see the NHI will have the opposite effect of what you think it will have. In collapsing the economy it will lead to a Zimbabwe like situation where medicine disappears, doctors leave, and life expectancy plummets. Infant mortality will skyrocket and surely there can be nothing more terrible than that.
The solution to the problem is via economic growth, fixing education, and getting all those who are unemployed or under employed into decent jobs increasing tax to the point where the current government health system is better financed. The current NHI solution if ever implemented will immediately cause me to leave South Africa taking my family with me and my rare skills, two engineering degrees, and my tax contributions. I will sadly depart the country I love and contribute to a nation that has effective governance. Please re-consider this plan of madness. The current government has shown in almost every state owned entity a complete lack of ability to effectively manage. The only thing holding SA together right now is our excellent private institutions. The NHI will largely make private healthcare illegal and replace it with something that is government run. None of the middle class that I know of will accept that scenario. Please regard this warning seriously, or the legacy of the ANC will be a life expectancy of 42 for its people, like Zimbabwe now faces, and the deaths of millions.
Kind regards,
