Nigerian held for $60m email scam

Cape Town - A 40-year-old Nigerian has been arrested for defrauding thousands of people worldwide through online scams worth more than $60 million, Interpol and the Nigerian Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) said on Monday.

The man, identified by Interpol only as "Mike," is believed to be the leader of an international email scam targeting small to medium-sized businesses in countries including Australia, Canada, India, Malaysia, Romania, South Africa, Thailand and the United States.

After all these years, how anyone still falls for the Nigerian scams baffles me. It takes a special kind of stupid.

The old saying goes there's one born every minute. Nowadays, with the population explosion, I suppose one is born every second.
 
A new trick when you are in the supermarket is for a stranger to approach you and say "hi, how are you, do you remember me?" When you express doubt, he will say (for example) "I work at Claremont Honda" since he saw you (or was told by an accomplice) that you got out of a Honda with the garage sticker on it

One such woman approached my wife in such a manner, whereupon she said in a loud voice "bugger off you con artist" and she ran out the door. Upon contacting (Fruit and Veg City) security they said there was nothing they could do as she had not stolen anything from them and were not interested that she might be accosting their customers

Ye, I don't think this is a simple give me some money so I can get the zillions my late father left out of this country to you. This must be more sophisticated.

Yep. I'm in the same boat...but we didn't recognise each other :)

Doesn't take much to listen luckily...when they get to the ask, you can decline politely without running the risk of being a douchebag to someone just trying to have a friendly natter.
