Awesome photo - worked 100%
For news photos - having people in is always a plus, just watch your composition (people at the right are a bit cut off at the bottom). Otherwise great shot.

Thanks!

Actually took a number with different timings, angles, ISO and even the F stops when I remember to change from my 2.8 - and most either had no people or they were all in the frame. As luck would have it, this photo looked the best and I started working with it ... only to see their feet cut off

... and I'm usually the ones that moans about that ... hehe ;)

LOL ... I have a stupid question about aperture which I should know by now.

I use aperture to control DoF and light - and to me this photo looks alright. How different would this same photo look at F13? I mean, at 2.8 just about everything is clear in the larger version I have?

I assume you are using a kit lens, 18-55mm? Even if its not that lens it's probably pretty close. So according to DOFmaster.com, at 18mm f2.8 with a subject distance of 6m, the near focus limit is 3m and far limit is 763m. So yes, almost everything in your image will be in focus BUT your lens will not be functioning at its optimum sharpness f-stop range which is usually 2-5 stops smaller than the widest aperture of the lens. That is why I suggested f9, not for DoF but for image sharpness. f13 might even be overkill for the lens and diffraction might start reducing sharpness already. My Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4.5 is really sharp at f2.8 but only in the center but at f7.1 it is super sharp from corner to corner. After f7.1 I get weird diffraction problems so I never shoot smaller than that.

Ah - thanks.

I'm using a 28mm 2.8 prime - but that makes sense.

The house is up for a while longer, so if I have time I'll pop over and try the same at a higher F!

EDIT : So I'm right in saying the difference between the current and the F9+ wouldn't be huge?
Especially when uploaded to here/Facebook where it is compressed anyhow?

Hey Grant, when are you going next? Maybe we can meet and work it out together?

Oi, you people, get off my lawn! :p Seriously though I live a stones throw from the "lighthouse" and have watched it develop over the years, each year it gets bigger and better.

Never been arsed to go down and take pics of it, perhaps this is the year I should.

If you're heading off again sometime let me know, I'll get off my couch and come try my hand at taking some pics.

MAN when i read posts like this I start to realize there is stuff to learn yet!! I mean we can mess with F stops, ISO and shutter speed and get a relatively good to great pic BUT the technical why is, why does etc etc this all work is in the technicalities which I never think of! If you know what i mean!

I'm not sure .... I'm still working, so I think it'll be easier between Xmas and NY to be there by 19:00.

But I'm keen!

Ok - tried at twilight ... and I reckon it worked!

Also did HDR - I think my errors were aperture at 2.8 (I default on that and forgot to change it) and ISO too high. But alright, I think :) Also people and cars everywhere :/

Thanks for the advice!

Notwithstanding the people in the foreground, it's a good pic and captures some of the beauty of this display.
