Nikon 3200 or canon 100d

Hello all

so my budget is around 7k

some say canon is good and the main advantage is the lens can be used on any canon camera

Nikon lenses are more expensive as well

the 100d goes for around 7k

do i need 2 lenses cos i will be only using the camera family pics and stuff

and i dont intend on doing game drives or anything soon

or is it good to have 2 lenses and keep the one just incase its needed

Strictly speaking no, you can't. There are two main types of canon dslr lenses - EF and EFs. EF lenses are compatible across all of Canons DSLRs but EFs are designed to be used with their range of APS-C crop bodies. The main drawback with EF lenses is they're usually more expensive.
 
Honestly, buy secondhand. On a local FB photo gear group there've been a few clean 40Ds for R2k! Then you could buy a good zoom like the 17-55 f2.8 with the leftover cash. Or a few fast, cheap primes like the 24 f2.8 and 50 f1.8. You'd have a much nicer setup than either of those mentioned above.

but for a beginner who has no idea about this is it atleast abit true that more lens work on canon and canon lenses are cheaper than nikon

I'm not a Nikon user but to the best of my knowledge Nikon has been using the same mount since the 60s so probably not - various capabilities of the lenses might not be compatible with all modern Nikon bodies but they can be used.

Price wise, in SA, Canon probably has the edge.
 
Some cameras will tell you the shutter count in the menu somewhere. For some you need to look at EXIF data from an image.

The group I mentioned is Cape Town Used Photo Gear, or something like that.

Broadly speaking, Canon EF-S lenses are crop-body-specific. They will not mount on full-frame bodies. EF lenses are for full-frame (35mm equiv) bodies. In that their image circle is big enough to fill a 35mm-equivalent sensor. But they can be used on crop or full-frame bodies. In both mounts, there are good lenses and bad lenses. You need to do your homework on the specific lenses in which you are interested.

In SA, Canon bodies and lenses are currently substantially cheaper than their Nikon equivalents.
 
im not looking at hardcore photography just normal photos

so thats why dont want to spend too much

but obviously later on if i want to upgrade i dont want to give my arm and leg

The 300mm tele lens with that Makro bundle does not have image stabilization. The same applies to the Takealot twin-lens bundle. This will impact on the usefulness of such a lens.

You may be better off getting the single lens bundle from Takealot and buying a better second hand tele lens.

The 300mm tele lens with that Makro bundle does not have image stabilization. The same applies to the Takealot twin-lens bundle. This will impact on the usefulness of such a lens.

You may be better off getting the single lens bundle from Takealot and buying a better second hand tele lens.
 
If it's mainly for family pics and stuff, then rather go with a decent bridge camera. Actually you should go with a bridge anyway, and only go SLR when you reach the limit of what you're trying to do...

See, you learn something new every day :p

Jokes aside, you might benefit from a polarising or ND filter down the road but they're probably not necessary right away. ;)

i have a bridge and it doesnt shoot very good in low light at all

and i like the manual focus on objects which the bridge cant do
