As I say I bought my first decent digital camera yesterday (decent to me ;).

It's a Canon, but I've only realised now the rivalry between the two brands. The guys in the office that consider themselves amateur photographers all have Canon EOS cameras. When I mentioned my stepfathers Nikon, they almost choked and told me how theirs were superior.

Another collegue's father is a photopgrapher and he uses Nikon and doesn't like Canon. The photo school my stepfather went prefers Canon too. Another friend has a Canon and dislikes Nikon ...

It's like the Xbox/PS3 war of cameras ;)

You'll find that both brands are excellent, there is virtually nothing to distinguish them from each other in terms of the output they produce in the right hands. Like most choices in life, it comes down to personal preference. And then, off course, the darwinian need to justify one's descision. Personally, I prefer the ergonomics of Nikon. And yes, I have used both.

One of those circular arguments that will never end.
Personally i think Canon shaves it because their lower end DSLRs have a few more features
but the reality is they are there and ther abouts.

you've got to be a retard to dislike one
they are the world leaders in still cameras
look at the 5d - Nikon had nothing like that for a long time
but then Nikon got back in the game
now Canon has the 5dii, but Nikon d3x cost too much
next will be Nikon's d700x

that's the way it goes

I just like the feel of the Nikon bodies more, and yes I used a canon for a day just to see if it might be more comfortable.

In spite of the techno wizardry, for me it comes down to how it feels in your hand ....

Both brands make awesome pieces of equipment ... the user makes all the difference.

Yup, me as well. Had both cameras - chose the Nikon. It was more comfortable in my hands.

A true professional does not sit around dissing brands all day long.

I know many pro's who use both Nikon and Canon and both are great camera's, you use the tools you need for the job you have to do.

I shoot Nikon myself and to this day have never ever run down the Canon brand, yet there seems to be constant bad words about Nikon from many (not all) Canon users who've never ever used a Nikon in their life. Use what works for you and avoid those who do nothing but run down brands like the plague.

As far as Canon having the upper hand with lenses, simply not true whatsoever and an indication of you never having used any Nikon lenses. Nikon does have a huge range of lenses and introduced about 10 new lenses to their range last year and probably have lots more in the pipeline too and the produce incredibly fine optics but that is not to say Canon does not also produce incredible fine optics.

It's really not about the camera/lenses it's about the images you can produce from it.

Basically my experience between the two brands

Lenses :
Nikon : "VR" Goood but pricey, generally later generation
Canon : "L" generally good & good better price point (and almost all weatherproof)

Consumer lenses generally Nikon better.

Body :

Nikon : until recently fairly poor high ISO performance (coupled with messy noise reduction) and an unpure raw (NEF) as well as a lack of full frame until recently. Things have improved with the switch to (Sony?) cmos sensors.

Canon : Generally good high ISO perf (cmos sensor). Availabilty of Full frame from near the outset of the digital revolution.

To be quite honest, Nikon sat on their laurels (name) for quite some time and got nabbed by canon quite badly. However they have made a serious effort and at this point in time probably have a slight technical lead in more categories than Canon in the D-SLR market.

The only downside to Nikon is that they charge a premium whether they are better or not.

some people like one car model, others like another, all personal preference.
Once you are locked into a brand though through lenses especially, it is hard to change unless you have a bank account like Tokyo Sexwale.

They sure did but have made quite a comeback in the last 12 months and it seems they have many plans afoot.

And that's no lie, they don't even supply a jar of vaseline when they swipe your credit card.

The only important thing is that once you make a choice that you stick with it. The bits and bobs that go with cameras are not interchangeable (well not in any meaningful way). I wouldn't have minded either but got the one that I did because the opportunity was right. And since then I've grown my 'system' without any regrets. And the same would have been true if I had gone with the 'dark side'.
