Nikon charge for sensor cleaning?

Have seen their supplies, not quite the same things, also very expensive by comparison. If I get their Digi Survival kit it's R400 and has 4 sensor swabs, R100 per cleaning, afaik they are not supposed to be reused. Or a pack of 12 sensor swabs for R600, R50 per cleaning.

If I got copperhill's "international basic kit" that's R337 inc postage for 100 cleanings, essentially R3.30 per cleaning.

I'd buy from the local guys in a pinch, maybe. I'd rather wait for the postage and pay much less though.

Check out these guys method I think it seems really good, of course I am inexperienced so I would value the input of others, http://www.copperhillimages.com/index.php?pr=tutorials.

I still would like to know if anyone knows how much Nikon would charge?

You need to clean your sensor 100 times? How old is your Nikon?

No, the point is it's much cheaper. Why would I pay R600 for a kit that gives me 12 cleanings when I can pay R337 for a kit that gives me 100?

@risingtide, thanks for that info, I guess I'll contact Nikon and ask them.

Understood, but how often are you going to clean the sensor? And then you don't have any recourse if you stuff it up.

IMHO If I were to send my camera to an authorized dealer and the price is around the same for 1 cleaning (vs 100 swabs). I'd choose the dealer - primarily because the risk is lower and thats what I'm paying for and that its not an often done process. If on the other hand I owned 5 cameras and regurlarly did shoots in harsh conditions then it would probably be a different story.

I've only needed a sensor* cleaned. Nine times out of 10 a quick swipe with an artists paint brush does what I need.

* Obviously its not the actual sensor that you clean but you know what I mean :)

i sent my Canon in once every year. heard too many horror stories of manual cleaning.

Pretty much as I see it @SubliminalThought. I do think that sooner or later I will want to do cleaning myself, that way I don't have to be without the camera at all. It really doesn't seem all that difficult anyway.

First time round I will probably just get Nikokn to do it, unless it's very expensive.

rurapente there are apparently horror stories of manufacturer cleaning as well, e.g. the thing coming back way dirtier than it was.

Care to share?

I've been doing sensor cleaning myself for 5yrs, especially with the 350d, with no problems.

btw, once a year is not enough...

Go see Steve at Sunray Photographic. For major cleans & services he's the best & cheapest. Used to be Nikon's guy ages ago. Only person I trust with my gear. [email protected] - they're based in Linden

Been there for something else actually recently, the Nikon HQ is actually closer to me though. Will ask both for quotes and whatever, does the Nikon warranty cover this or won't it be void if someone else handles it?

If I'm not mistaken, the Nikon warranty is lifetime.
The sensor-cleaning service they provide is free of charge.
If someone else handles it, they should be Nikon-certified otherwise the warranty is void if something does happen, God forbid.

If the Nikon camera body is ex Nikon SA, then the cleaning of the sensor if free. I"ve used this service a few times already on the various Nikons that I have owned.
If you take it to them, it's done while you wait. They also normally check a few other things at the time, like the shutter, etc.
