Nikon D3100 + Sigma 18-200mm

I am absolutely new to the SLR/DSLR world and this is probably a very silly question but hopefully someone will clarify it nonetheless

I am looking to buy this D3100 + Sigma lens. I have just browsed online catalogs and have not handled any of these products in the shop.

My question: If I have to use Sigma 18-200mm, then is 18-55mm detachable or one has to stack one on top of other? Or it can work either way (with some adapter or something?)

Hi Raoul,

One of them main concepts behind D/SLR's is that of interchangeable lenses. Although for special purposes people may use adapter rings to use two lenses at the same time (e.g. using a lens reversal ring for macro purposes), typically you use a single lens on the camera body. They take just a few seconds to swap, with a simple releasing mechanism.

Based on your selection above, I'd suggest you look for a D3100 "body only" deal (i.e. without any lens) and then buy the Sigma lens separately. I use a lens with that same zoom range as that Sigma myself and my 18-55mm lens sits gathering dust. You see, the 18-200 Sigma has the same range as the 18-55 plus the extra zoom range to 200mm, so there is overlap between the two lenses.

i've got the nikon d3000 with the 18-55 vr kit lens. A few months ago I bought the sigma 18-250 lens and haven't used the 18-55 since. Just one word of caution, the sigma is much larger than the kit lens, when taking shots at wide angle with the built-in flash on it can cast a shadow at the bottom of the picture.
Last week I bought the nikon 35mm/f1.8 lens, really enjoying it so far.

EDIT: Also note that not all lenses will auto-focus on the d3100. You need a lens with a built-in motor, so check this before you buy a lens.
