hey APoc84,
how has the cam been working since you first got it. I am also very interested in getting this as an upgrade for my bridge

Hi Positively Negative

I am extremely happy with my camera.

I have nothing bad to say about the camera and every time I use it I learn something new.

I used it last night at a rugby game. First time that I've used it for action photos and I still have a lot to learn. Struggled a bit with focusing fast enough but still happy with some of the photos I got.

Will upload some pictures now for all to see.

D3100 Action photos

Below are some of the photos I took at the rugby. First action shoot I ever tried.

Time was between 16h30 and 19h00 with natural light fading fast.
It was overcast for 95% of the photos and with the floodlights on.

Used 55-200mm Kit Lens for all the shots with ISO between 400 and 800 as light faded more and more.

The shot with the rugby ball and arm was cropped 100%. ISO was 800, thus it is a bit grainy.

Let me know what you think. Honest opinions please.

Not bad APoc84. :) I'd straighten out the last two though.

I guess you've figured out why ppl pay the money for the fast lenses. Shooting at f/2.8 or even f/4 makes a world of difference when you're trying to freeze motion. The only thing you can do right now though is continue to raise your ISO and I think you could/should have gone even higher for some of those shots.

well, after seeing these photos I think my choice has been set... my graduation pressie to myself is gonna be a D3100... then just to sell the kit lens off, convince my dad to buy glass for his D300s and we can go from there ;)

I was shooting mostly in Shutter Priority(S) mode and when taking photos of slow moving images or random images I used Aperture Priority(A).

I'm still learning but I've already noticed that I get better results using those settings rather than the Scene modes(Sport, Portrait, Auto).

Hows this for a deal ?

Nikon D3100
18-55mm VR + 55-300mm VR
+ 35mm f/1.8 DX
Nikon Action 8x40 Binoculars
Nikon SLR Backpack
Lexar Premium 8GB SDHC Card

R 9,999.00

They definitely forgot "door bell" and "3 clothespins by price of 2" :)
From these lens I prefer 35 and one "fit all" sausage like 18-250. Changing lens while your shot runs away is the worst idea.
BTW I bought my 3100 on the same exhibition - whoa! :) I'm happy. Any questions are welcome.
PS
If somebody need 55-200 (from kit above) - let me know.

Apply the sunny 16 rule - the moon being well lit by the sun and all ;) - and you'll find you don't need a high ISO or slow shutter speed for moon shots. :)

Funny you should ask.

I saw the exact same moon last night, grabbed my tripod and headed outside to try and get some awesome shots.

THEY CAME OUT K(A)K. :D

The last thing I will blame is the camera. I just have no clue how to take such photographs.
Will have a look now at bwana's sunny rules or something and if the moon is well lit again tonight, I will give it another shot or two or one hundred.

You need a lot less light than you think you will. :)

I noticed that very soon. :)

The problem I had was: When I managed to exposed it so that the moon was not over exposed, I lost all the surrounding clouds which actually made me want to take the photos. I also grew a bit impatient after a while because I had to keep on using the self-timer to eliminate any camera shake(I don't have a remote and not even sure if you get one for the D3100).

You might consider HDR if you want to preserve the highlights and still get the clouds.
