Does anyone have any experience with this camera?

I'm considering buying one since I need/want a camera & this seems like the best deal I can get (just over 5k for body & kit lens).

Also does the Black vs Red model differ in any way other than ugliness? (The red is 1k cheaper & I'm not particularly constrained by appearances)

You could always get one of those silicone covers for it.

At that price are you sure that it is not the D3200 instead?

No idea - but if you stencilled Canon on it few people would realise it's a nikon… :p
Bru if I buy a cannon it'll be one of these

Quick google doesn't pick up any camera condoms for the D3300 anyway. :/

The D3300 uses the same sensor as the high-end Nikon crop sensor SLRs. The compromises that were made for the cheaper camera relate to things like the number of autofocus points, the burst shooting speed and the viewfinder quality. I think that they also dropped compatibility with the really old screw drive autofocus lenses, but you would need to check on this if it is important to you.

This means that the camera would not be suitable for professional level sports photography, but would probably give better image quality than other cameras near this price due to that sensor. Looks like a good one to get.

... waits for the Canon people to arrive ...

Pulled the trigger on this.

Really chuffed because I got a sweet deal both on the camera kit and the card. Plus its a black body not red.

Nikon D3300 w/ kit lens, 64GB 150mb/s card and a backpack. Round 6.5k total so good value. :D

Well given that this my first "real" camera I think "not suitable for professional level sports photography" won't be a problem in the near term. :D Yeah I saw the viewfinder wasn't popular on the reviews. The screw drive thing *might* be a problem...family has a bunch of lens...so possible compatibility issues there. Still seems like a good entry level deal. :)

I've got a D3100, but I'm looking to sell and upgrade. I definitely think getting an entry-level thing to learn on is the way, lets you figure out what sort of photography you're into.

Sounds like you got a really good deal (those backpack things are always so damn expensive!), if I were you I'd look at adding a 55-200mm lens and that will have you covered for most "types" of shooting, then you can see what suits you and get a really nice lens in that range. Later you can decide if something like the 24-70mm or the 70-200mm are more your thing.

Well I went entry level there too - Amazon basic backpack for like 400 zar. Won't impress anyone but good enough.

Yeah its actually surprising how little options there are on these cameras. After figuring out the whole ISO/aperture etc settings there isn't much else left in terms of options. That said - knowing about options and mastering them is two different things. :o

Yeah the bundled lens is thoroughly underwhelming - but kinda expected. Body-only was like 800 ZAR price diff so it made sense to take that. Looking back that was a mistake. For 1k zar I could have bought a 2nd hand 55-200 as you say.

For now just going to delay more lens as long as I can. Considered renting some when I in SA in December...but those prices. Works out better to buy the lens 2nd hand.
