Hi Fellow myBB'ers,

I've just been advised by a friend to grab the Nikon D90 + 18-105mm lens for R7499.95 at Incredible Connection

Can anybody give me a reason why I shouldn't rush out right away and get it? I'm looking for a starter camera and have been considering a Canon 550D plus twin lens combo for about the same price. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Thanx,
K T.

D90 is a great camera... also, that kit lens is good quality and very versatile. I've been shooting with a D90 body for a while now.

I would rather got for a 15-200 VR lens if you can modify the deal.

I'm sure you have been - it's an [-]old[/-] well established body. :D

The advantage of the twin lens from Canon is that you can always sell off the 18-55 and replace it with a better/faster one and still keep the 55-250 (which is great).

Would anyone buy that lens?

I bought that lens for my daughter to complement the 18-55 on her 1100D.

It's the best bang for buck zoom lens, quality wise.

Edit, sorry thought you meant the 55-250. Dolby bought my 18-55 :)

If you're referring to the 18-55, I bought one.

I had a strict budget that I blew on a telephoto lens and body only (no kit) - but this left me without any short end whatsoever and needed the cheapest short end available. Plus, after using it, I don't find it half bad considering how much it's worth.

What did you pay? I also thought the 18-55 wasn't worth anything, almost like a throw away lens.

I had a similar dilemma last year, but eventually went for the Nikon D7000 with the 18-200 VR II lens. Canons mid-range kit lenses are not the greatest and in that respect I think Nikon make better lenses around that level. The Canon 550D along with the D90 have been superceded by the 600D and the D7000 respectively. Just remember you are buying into a system and you will be locked in with Nikon lenses for years to come, not that there's anything wrong with that, but Nikon lenses do tend to cost more than their Canon equivalents and that puts some people off. Nikon do however throw in a lens hood and a carry-pouch for their lenses, which are sadely lacking from the Canon range. They also give you a one day training course with your DSLR purchase, which Canon do not, so that all adds up. Aftermarket lenses like Sigma are of course an option! The D90 is a proven camera body and the pricing is very keen. There's nothing wrong with that 18-105 lens and it is arguably a bit sharper than my 18-200 VR II. It's a good walkabout lens and you probably won't even miss the 18-55 lens. The next lens you might consider is the 70-300 zoom. I wasn't that keen on the Canon 550D's screen which is offset to the left. The D90s screen is centrally located on the back of the body with a better spread of buttons. I think you've made a wise choice and hope you will be happy with your purchase.

Sounds like a fine deal, but I would've considered a second hand body and decent L lens.

Interestingly, this guy rates the Nikon version of the 18-55 as one of the 10 best lenses (taking value for money into account, no doubt).

I think part of the problem is that inexperienced photographers, or those switching to a dslr, might blame the lens rather than acknowledging that poor results are their fault.

Then again Ken Rockwell is a bit of a twit. ;)

I see you edited this. Either way ken Rockwell has his opinion and I dont always agree. I agree with you but I use more words.:)
I use Nikon, and I still agree with bwana, it must be the cold whether or something.

Hey, if you have a spare R17K, you may want to try the 'Bigma': http://www.techcentral.co.za/the-bigma-sigmas-new-behemoth/25153/
