Nintendo Switch sales fall less than two years after launch

Nintendo Co. cut its outlook for annual Switch shipments, the strongest sign yet that the hybrid console is struggling to attract a wider swath of users and become a worthy successor to the Wii.

Shares of Nintendo fell as much as 6.9 percent after it forecast 17 million Switch shipments for the fiscal year through March, compared with its prior outlook for 20 million units and analysts’ average prediction for 18 million.

Meanwhile, back on planet earth....

Nintendo had the best quarter ever for Switch sales, with 9.41 million consoles moved between October and December, a 30 percent improvement on a year ago. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Pokémon: Let’s Go were also both massive hits, at 12.08 million and 10 million units sold respectively. Super Mario Party performed well, too, selling 5.3 million copies.

Despite the huge numbers, though, Nintendo almost certainly won’t be able to hit its self-imposed target of 20 million Switch consoles sold this financial year. The current amount sold since April is 14.49 million units, but last year Nintendo sold just under two million. Accordingly, the company has revised its forecast down to 17 million units for the fiscal year.

Switch sales momentum remains strong, however, with 32.27 million consoles sold since launch — and few expected Nintendo to hit the ambitious 20 million figure in the first place.

Yet the article would have us believe Nintendo is on the verge of collapse.

Yeah. The picture painted and the reality are quite different. Still love my Switch. Just need more time to get around to actually playing the games I have.

It’s just weird. I’ve been reading all morning just how much of a success the Switch has been, and then I look at mybb and it’s a disaster for Nintendo.

Here’s an Endgadget report from today, the very same day that mybb somehow chose to report that the switch is dying.

It's no surprise that the Switch has been a huge success for Nintendo. In its earnings report today, the company revealed that it sold over 32 million Switch units, which means it's getting close to dethroning the beloved Nintendo 64.

Breath of the wild is 1K on takealot:crying:. Add that to the 5 or so k for the Switch, Thats 6k for just one game that I want to play

Yeah I might go second hand. Or just borrow the one my friend has lying in his cupboard for a year

I played BOTW for a while on the Wii U before I got my Switch. Maybe an option if it's the only game you want to play and you can find a cheap deal? But I'd easily say it's the best console I've ever owned and is well worth grabbing it if you can.

Nintendo never fares well in SA..... I'm a self proclaimed Nintendo fangirl and I battle to justify to anyone paying more for Switch than a PS4 or Xbox.

I dunno. I'm also a Nintendo fan boy with a Nintendo crazy family who has at one stage owned every console and pretty much every handheld they have released. In fact, we have 2 x Switches at home .... as well as a Wii U, Wii, Gamecube, 3 x SNES, 3 x 3DS, 3 x DS lite, a Gameboy SP, a SNEs mini and a NES mini :D

It has been hard to follow Nintendo in SA over the years with a slight resurgence with the Wii, but it's well worth it in the end :p

Oh, not to justify to me, to anyone who isn't a Ninty fan, is what I meant :p Also 2 Switches, 2 WiiU's in the house, and more Ninty handheld's than I care to mention..... I adore my Switch. Most recent addiction being Sushi Striker's and Pokemon Lets Go!... I have yet to do anything in BotW other than cook (IOW I've not played it). Studies need to come first, and that game deserves unbroken, hours long sittings, which I just cannot do right now.

Wasn't trying to justify it to you but to others :p

I gave Let's Go Evee about 6 or 7 hours but couldn't resist the lure of Zelda so am back on that. I can't play as often as I like but I'm 70 hours in and I feel like I have just scratched the surface. It really is the best game ever imo.

On the other end of the spectrum:

Got a switch (Odessy Special Edition ) in 2017, and got BoW. Finished Mario Odyssey, then messed about with Zelda for a few hours and have barely touched it since. It's pretty much a paper-weight to me. Easily spends weeks at a time in it's dock.

Just doesn't compare to PS4 and PC gaming IMO, at least until a "real" pokemon game comes out on it.

I think its a fantastic console.
Over the holiday's,my brothers family came to visit.Just popped the switch into the dock, gave each one a controller and enjoyed hours of fun playing MK8.
The little ones really enjoyed that and could easily hold the joycons

Games wise it’s different to PS, XB and PC which are all aiming for the same market to play the same games and thankfully, imo, then yes it doesn’t compare. For me it’s head and shoulders above :p

Not only for the games because I’d love to see some more big 3rd party AAA games as well, but for the portability and sheer convenience of gaming on the go.

For me it’s my PS4 that’s gathering dust. Can’t be doing with carrying my 55” tv around with me for a quick lunchtime session :D

Each to their own, luckily we have no limits on gaming options to keep everyone happy :)

Our PS4 is a dust collector. We both game on our xbones, but nowhere near as regularly as our Switches. And when one of the xbones is on, it's usually for Netflix :p
