Hey guys

So I went and impulse bought a Switch, seems like something I would enjoy being portable and everything.

Just bought the console, as the games I am interested in are all available on the eStore and are slightly cheaper.

Get home, connect it up to the wifi to start the first download...
...and 7 hours for 13GB?? On a 100Mbps line... :wtf::wtf:

Anyone else have these terrible speeds? Is it just because we are at the bottom end of Africa?

Running on 2.4G wifi, and the switch is literally 1m away from the router.

No, it’s because Nintendo know nothing about online services.

Splatoon 2 just launched so their servers are being raped.

That was going to be my next download, now I'm wondering if I should even bother.
Or just leave it all plugged in overnight till the weekend when hopefully everything is there

Oh I know how to fix this, I had exactly the same problem. You need to change your DNS settings. See this tutorial.

Thanks man
My router DNS settings are already set to the Google ones.
I wanted to try 5G wifi, but now cannot get into my router. Can't remember the password... Hahaha... FML

You need to set it on the Switch, not the router. Believe me, I literally couldn't connect to a match in MK8 or watch a video till someone pointed me to that article.

Ok, I'll give it a shot. Nothing to lose.

Slight progress being made.

The DNS settings made no difference for me, however, while I was in there I saw the MTU was set to 1400. Changed that to 1500, sort of remember that number from my router settings, and speed has gone from 4Mbps to 37Mbps now.

Whether the Router or on the Switch the DNS servers are the same so it makes no difference where it’s set.

Dished out via DHCP or set manually. Same data.

This is on the switch right?

What a bizarre default value if it is.

Ok, so the best value I can set is 1492. No fragmentation. Speeds are now 37Mbps down and 35Mbps up. Don't think I'm going to see any better than that. Will try 5G wifi when I get a chance to reset the whole router. Cannot remember wtf the password is

Edit : Yes, 1400 was the default on the Switch
