I love this idea, but here's my problem with it...
1) Mainstream gaming has evolved. Your core gamers are not going to be 8 bit Mario fanbois.
2) Collectability. The 8 bit fanbois are out there, sure, but they're mostly purists... collectors... you don't collect modern retro - that's like having one of these in your lounge:
when you can have one of these:
One is a genuine, valuable piece, the other is just kitsch. You don't collect and own a NES system for the gameplay. It's the nostalgia and collectability. The original Bubble Bobble 2 NES cartridge (with box and manual in good nick) is valued at around $500 alone.
3) Nintendo already allow you to play the retro stuff on your Wii U via virtual console.
4) Those who just want to play NES can already do that to their heart's content via a number of emulators on anything from their smartphone to Wii to PC. Do they want another gadget in the house to connect to the TV? Probably not. Maybe some do?
Perhaps there are people out there who aren't geeks but want the retro flashback, though I don't think there are too many of those around.
Anyone know how many of the Atari 2600 reboots sold?

This is exactly it, there is a community of people out there like this. Why do you think those rip off playstations that play tv games sell at Game.

Hmm... never thought about it. I always wondered why they sell. Low cost entertainment? These don't look too low cost....
