I have just purchased a Wii for my two sons. How would I go about to check the current firmware version, and how do i update it if there is a new one available?

Welcome to the Wii world.

Firstly you will need to configure your wii for Internet. This can be done two ways as far as I know :
  1. Using the wii's wifi connectivity to your adsl router
  2. Using a Wii ethernet adapter to your router

Once your wii is configured for those ( for more details check your manual ) , go to the system menus and scroll until you find the firmware update option. The update can take a bit of time depending on your connection.

Word of advice, if you are looking to use the news, weather or virtual shop channel , change your wii's region to a more widely distributed one ie: england, Ireland etc. Personally I wouldn't use england as the shop charges you in pounds but if you use any other European country they charge in euro's which works out cheaper.

As far as your connection is concerned, an unshaped account would be preferable especially for smoother access to the shop channel for downloading VC games and other stuff.

Why? What protocols are used?

From the amount of time that you spend on the Virtual Shop, I would not say that you need an unshaped account.

Before anyone asks , I've got a normal 384/128 off imaginet shaped.

Guys, I'm just commenting on the way myself and some other friends experienced the Wii when going online with it. As soon as it was first setup a mandatory update was required, and on our standard 512k standard account this was slooooow. So slooooow it times out. And once it times out, you have to start again. After a while we decided to get an unshaped WebAfrica account, and then it worked like a charm, breezing through the updates. Just our experience with the Wii. Could be different for others I'm not sure.

Tried setting your router to 'Bridge Mode'?

Another way to update your firmware is to just get a new game like Super mario galaxy. My wii has been updated 3 times via games.

Interesting - updates may indeed use a propietary or other protocol... not sure it's worth the money to upgrade the account though, however I haven't tried so I can't comment... Anyone else experienced this - it's worth a mention!
