New Nissan trademark application hints at upcoming small SUV's name

Nissan has filed a fresh trademark application for the “Magnite” nameplate, with a report out of India suggesting the badge will be applied to a new small SUV.

According to IndianAutosBlog.com, the Japanese firm has filed a trademark application for the Magnite badge, while also applying to trademark a logo for the upcoming model.

Expect the new model to measure less than four metres nose to tail, allowing it to qualify for a lower excise duty in India. It will thus slot into Nissan’s broader range below the likes of the Qashqai, Juke and Kicks, and compete with the likes of the Hyundai Venue, Kia's upcoming Sonet and the Mahindra XUV300.

Size-wise, the new Magnite compact SUV will slot in below the Nissan Kicks and will be built in India. Nissan has been promising the Kicks to arrive in South Africa for years now and the wait has been painful, so much so, that we have given up on waiting. We aren't getting our hopes up with the Magnite either…

Nissan is looking at introducing a new compact family SUV and it may carry the Magnite nameplate.

Reports out of India are pointing to the arrival of a new 4-metre compact family SUV coming to market in the near future to take on rivals such as the Ford EcoSport and Hyundai Venue. The new model, which may be called Magnite, has been slated for release in India for January 2021. More images have surfaced showing the front quarter including headlamp design. The front grille has something of a Datsun design to it as well, something that suggests it may have originally been designed to badged as a Datsun. The Renault/Nissan Alliance has since decided to reduce Datsun offering globally.

The Nissan Magnite is also said to share a platform with the upcoming Renault Kiger, another small SUV coming from the brand. With these being right-hand drive versions, there is a possibility they could find their way onto the South African market. We have contacted the brands for comment and will update as soon as we hear anything.

New Nissan Magnite concept previews brand's Hyundai Venue rival

Nissan has taken the wraps off its new Magnite concept in India, billing the show car as a preview of its “highly anticipated” baby crossover.

Set to be manufactured in India, the production version will be exported to markets in Africa and the Middle East. It will measure less than four metres in length.

While Nissan South Africa has yet to confirm whether the Magnite will make it to local shores, marketing director Kabelo Rabotho recently told CARmag.co.za the brand was “looking at introducing two vehicles in the lower end or what we call the B-segment”.

We’d speculate the Magnite would be one of them (the second perhaps being the Kicks, with the latest Juke seemingly less likely to make the cut), positioned to take on the likes of the Hyundai Venue and upcoming Kia Sonet, and perhaps even the slightly larger Ford EcoSport and Volkswagen T-Cross.

Nissan's new Magnite baby SUV is a likely candidate for South Africa

Nissan’s Indian division has revealed the concept version of its upcoming compact SUV, which will be called the Magnite.

Measuring less than four metres in length, the Magnite will have a similar footprint to the Hyundai Venue. If the production model remains true to the concept vehicle that we see here, it should find favour with buyers looking for a stylish SUV on a budget.

Nissan South Africa has yet to confirm whether the Magnite will come to South Africa, but it does make perfect sense for our market. The local division has also stated its intention to introduce two new compact SUVs to our market, and we’d bet our bottom dollar that this is one of them.

Coming to SA! New Nissan Magnite unwrapped as latest baby crossover

The new Nissan Magnite has been revealed in India, arriving just three months after the concept and slotting in at the foot of the Japanese firm’s crossover range.

While Nissan South Africa has yet to confirm whether the Magnite will make it to local shores, marketing director Kabelo Rabotho recently told CARmag.co.za the brand was “looking at introducing two vehicles in the lower end or what we call the B-segment”.

We’d speculate the Magnite would be one of them, positioned to take on the likes of the Hyundai Venue and upcoming Kia Sonet, and perhaps even the slightly larger Ford EcoSport and Volkswagen T-Cross. Expect a local introduction at some point in 2021.

While Nissan has confirmed the new Magnite will draw its urge from an “all-new” turbocharged 1,0-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine (with a manual gearbox as standard plus the option of a continuously variable transmission), it has yet to confirm the unit's peak outputs. Ground clearance, meanwhile, comes in at 205 mm, while the firm’s 360-degree “Around View Monitor” technology will be offered.

A Close Look : Nissan Magnite - Team-BHP

The Nissan Magnite Concept sub-4 meter crossover was unveiled in July this year. Now, the company has given us a preview of the pre-production version of the car in Mumbai. The vehicle is expected to be launched in India by the end of 2020.

SA-bound Nissan Magnite: More details

The Indian-made Nissan Magnite compact family car is set to arrive in South Africa early in 2021. Details of the range in the Indian market (from where the SA-market model will be sourced) have been revealed, which provides strong clues to the local line-up...

In a recent virtual roundtable conference, Nissan South Africa's marketing director, Kabelo Rabotho, confirmed the Rosslyn-based brand was looking at introducing 2 new compact crossover/SUV products (the Magnite, ostensibly as a replacement for the Qashqai, and probably the next-generation X-Trail), as well as potentially introducing the Navara-based Terra SUV on local soil. The Kicks might be in the picture too…

Last month, Nissan revealed the production version of the Magnite, which will be built at the Oragadam plant in India. It will rival models such as the Ford EcoSport, Hyundai Venue and Volkswagen T-Cross, Kia Sonet, Mahindra XUV 300, Renault Captur and Suzuki Vitara.
