Dlamini-Zuma is coming back

After four years as AU chairperson, former cabinet minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma will be returning to South Africa.

African Union Commission chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma will be replaced in July, the South African government has finally confirmed.

Department of international relations head of public diplomacy, Clayson Monyela, told Mail & Guardian on Tuesday in a text message: “It was never a secret. She’s not running for a second term. Definitely coming back.”

This is the first official confirmation of Dlamini-Zuma’s return. Government has, as yet, not made a public announcement about it.

Zimbabwe’s The Sunday Mail this weekend reported that the Southern African Development Community last week nominated Botswana foreign affairs minister, Pelonimi Venson-Mioti, to succeed Dlamini-Zuma, who will not seek a second term.

A South African government official told the Mail & Guardian three weeks ago that Dlamini-Zuma has informed government that she would not be staying on at the AU.

Dlamini-Zuma’s spokesperson Jacob Enoh has not reacted to an emailed query, but staff members in Dlamini-Zuma’s office have privately confirmed that she has already told them she would not be seeking a second term.

Talk in the ANC is that Dlamini-Zuma is likely to return to South Africa to run for a top ANC leadership position, possibly for president to succeed her ex-husband, President Jacob Zuma.

Dlamini-Zuma’s one term has infuriated other countries in the region, who felt that SADC was entitled to two terms in the chair and her stepping down this year could mean SADC losing the chair.

There is an unwritten convention for AU Commission chairs to stay on for their maximum two terms – which amounts to eight years.

Zimbabwe’s secretary for foreign affairs, Ambassador Joey Bimha, told The Sunday Mail: “SADC member states (at a ministers’ meeting last week) were in agreement that it was still Southern Africa’s turn to chair the AU Commission. Member states were asked to come up with a candidate and there was a special meeting, which took place in South Africa.”

The deadline for nominations is Thursday, and a new chairperson is set to be elected at the AU summit in Kigali, Rwanda in July. Dlamini-Zuma is set to return in October, after a handover to the new chair.

There was fierce and divisive lobbying in 2012 when she took over from former AU Commission chaiperson, Jean Ping.

Just in time to enter the race for ex husband, Jacob's presidency.
Watch this woman race to the top of the polls and clinch it.

SHE HAS ALREADY BEEN BOUGHT by the GUPTAs who anticipated as usual and gave her the R 250 000 cheque as the "SOUTH AFRICAN PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR 2015" at the GUPTA's RSA Human Value Contest.

She accepted this with a LOT of smile, and a BIG speech... The Guptas were too sure that she will be "their person" insider at Union Buildings after Zuma vacates office.

Even Thuli Madonsela was awarded "SOUTH AFRICAN PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR" in 2014 by the same Guptas.

So this thing that Dlamini-Zuma is not her own person but extension of her former husband and in turn Guptas is wrong and belittles her as an individual.

In her term as Health Minister she was well known as ZUMA : Zero Understanding of Medical Affairs.
Her performance in the AU has been equally dismal too.
She's not exactly presidential material is she?

Well we know that an IQ-deficient, morally bankrupt womanizer is not an issue, but I'm not sure how well a female president would go down with the masses.

She has not said she'll be running for ANC presidency, this talk of her succeeding Zuma is media creation.

She doesn't have to say it, the writing is on the wall. The chief of the tribe already said that the country is ready for a woman president...

Well known as that where? Besides Leon Schuster that is, who was pissed at her anti-smoking legislation.

She is actually a medical doctor, by the way, for all those wanting someone more educated in government.

Well, it is rather apt, you have to admit. It applies nicely to ol' showerhead himself, too.

It applies to Jacob for sure, he is uneducated, not sure about Nkosizana though as she is a medical doctor.

Although I do have to acknowledge she made a number of blunders and bad decisions during her time as health minister (Sarafina and Virodene), she also had some measure of success in other areas (smoking legislation and de-segregating the health system)
As the new SA's first health minister she had a huge challenge in formulating health systems for nine new provincial structures which also gave poor people access to free basic healthcare. Not an easy job.

That said, I don't think she is presidential material - she would be better than Jacob and many others waiting in line though.

There's zero chance she's not in the Gupta's pocket, though.

Can we afford to take a chance with ANOTHER Zuma. I think not.
Her surname will surely count against her.
