Cape Town – Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University students in Port Elizabeth have blocked the South and North campus entrances, the institution said on Tuesday.
In a mass meeting on Monday, students decided to heed the national call to shut down all universities, following Higher Education and Training Minister Blade Nzimande's fees announcement.
"We are monitoring the situation," the university said.
Meanwhile, the student representative council at the university said they would hold another mass meeting with students to present a memorandum of demands to management.
"The university management must come and make their stance on whether they are uniting with us in this call or not. Shuttles will be available to fetch students from off-campus to come to the shutdown. We will ensure that catering staff is present in the residence cafeterias," the SRC said in a statement.
They would ensure that academic commitments were catered for, they said.
Nzimande a 'high-key skelm'
"We further call on all students to rally behind the call for free education and join the shutdown."
More than 100 students stood around at the two entrances on Tuesday calling for unity.
Brandishing posters and burning a tyre outside the North Campus in Summerstrand, the students sang struggle songs as more joined the protest.
The angry students carried posters calling for university fees to fall, while one declared that "Blade is a high-key skelm".
On Monday, Nzimande announced that 2017 fee increases would be up to the universities, but would be capped at 8%.
However, students on the financial aid scheme and the "missing middle" would not feel the pinch, as the increase would be subsidised by government.
