No ADSL coverage in my area?

Hi All,

Wondering whether any of you can make sense of this

I bought a house a while back and moved into it this weekend.
I just got off the phone with telkom. According to them, there is no ADSL coverage in my area....

I had a look here: http://www.broadbandstats.co.za/exchange/WBCF11

According to that map, there is a 10Mbps enabled exchange not even 1km away from me? How can ADSL not be covered?

I live in cabernet street, protea village, Brackenfell.

Do you guys have any suggestions as to what can be done in this instance? I'll never be able to go without a proper ADSL line.
I need my downloads and my DOTA! :(

Thing is, I don't even have a voice line. That is the main reason I phoned. I don't want to pay the R170 odd p/m for nothing :(

I'm thinking of maybe going to a telkom store. Maybe they are a bit more clued up there

I'm about 4km's from you, in Protea Heights, and we're 10Mb enabled. Perhaps no ports available?
Go to either Tygervalley or Cape Gate rather than the call center; also didn't have any luck with the call center a few years ago. The guy at Tygervalley is fairly helpful.
 
If ADSL is so important to you shouldn't you have checked that the house had ADSL coverage BEFORE you bought it?

That's actually not an exchange but a SDC, your exchange is actually located on the other side of Old Paarl Rd behind the Brackenfell post office. That being said you should still have ADSL access I think.

Try and get hold of a Telkom techie, if you see one of their vans parked off approach and ask them, alternatively take a drive to the post office and go shout through the gate to the Telkom exchange to draw someones attention (there should be a security guard at the gate) :D

Maybe they are just out of ADSL ports, you never know.

I am seriously getting iritated by that comment. There are ishloads of reason why people buy properties where they do:
 
I was told the same thing and it turned out that there were no ports available. It required a 2 year fight with Telkom and eventually taking it up the food chain to quite an extent before it was resolved. I'd suggest you pester Telkom, and find a techie in the area to have a chat to.

Also PM TelkomZA and ask them to confirm...

I'm waiting for the day when OTPs contain a "Subject to ADSL availability" clause - it'll drive the estate agents & conveyancers insane dealing with 10210 :D

Each to his own. Personally I would never commit to purchasing or renting a property before checking and double checking that it had ADSL coverage. I'm getting seriously irritated by people who come onto MyBroadband crying crocodile tears because they've just moved into a new property and only discover after moving in that they can't get ADSL. I mean, surely it's the first thing you check if you value having an internet connection?

It's 2014. How can you NOT have ADSL coverage in a dense populated area?

Do other folks in the village have ADSL?

This is South Africa and you're dealing with Telkom. Even if your next door neighbour has ADSL there is no guarantee that you will be able to get it.
 
They most likely said 'there is no infrastructure' , which to them means no ports are available at the moment.

Just got off the phone with Telkom. Told them I want a voice line installed and that I'm getting it for ADSL purposes. The person that helped me didn't say anything about ADSL not being available in the area. Phone line ordered - They will install in the next 7 - 21 days.
