I removed the HDD from my wife's Acer 4315 notebook the other day to install another OS for testing. After I was done, I put the original drive back and booted up into Windows 7. I then noticed that the little speaker icon indicated that no audio device was present. Device manager showed that there definitely was no device as well. I downloaded a driver for it and tried to install it hoping that it would help re-initialize the sound card, but no change. There is also no BIOS settings that can be changed for a sound device.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks for that but drivers are not the problem. No sound device appears in device manager. Re-scanning for hardware changes makes no difference. I tried a Linux Mint live disk and there was no audio device there as well. It seems more like a hardware fault than a software fault. :(

My advice would be to rule out software by replacing the drive with another one that contains a different OS and see if you have sound. If you don't, you know there's a problem with your hardware.

Did that with OSX on another drive. No sound. I'll try again with XP tomorrow.
