Hi, my brother sent me his blackberry from USA, it was on the verizon network and he unlocked it, i have inserted a cell c prepaid sim in it, i dont have any internet on it, and there is no browser icon, what is causing this problem or ... it bb dont work with prepaid cards?

I am on prepaid and it works fine. I am not sure if CellC offers BIS. They barley offer a proper voice service :p.

Only Vodacom and MTN offer BIS/BES. So the only way for you to get it working would be to port to one of them or just get a VC or MTN sim.

okay call me dumb girl but i just have a few questions, can i use a normal contract vodacom card on it, and how do i go about getting a bis set up on it or the plan for it, and how do i set up the phone itself to use the net and get the icon back???

You can use a normal Vodacom or MTN contract just call their customer care line and ask them to activate BIS (blackberry internet service) on the number you're using. It costs about R60-70 a month (completely worth the price) and once it's activated you'll see a lot of helpful setup options and downloads and icons suddenly appear on your phone. If you still have trouble post here, but your Blackberry is worthless until you activate BIS.

For Vodacom dail *111#, select bundle purchase, blakberry, blablabla. Its gonna cost you R59 per month. Not sure if its going to work though.

I really find blackberries irritating. Seems completely useless without BIS.
I don't want to pay the monthly BIS fee because I don't use it. We use a active sync app for our email, not BIS. But now I don't have a browser icon because I don't have a BIS subscription? What a load of crap!

But you'd use the data for getting your mail on the phone, that'll probably amount to the same. If I weren't on a contract already I'd happily pay the R59/month to not have to worry about data usage.

Because data is billed on a monthly charge on BB's therefor you have to BIS active. Sell your BB if you're not using it to it's full capacity.

Not my blackberry to sell, some of the fellows at work.
@ rainy - I need to find out more about that. So the BIS subscription covers all data? Or just data sent via BIS (sorry, not too clued up with BIS, so maybe I'm being unfair here)

@Belix, BIS covers mail, web and messaging traffic from and to your device. In addition, the absolute majority of third party apps on the BB that use data, use BIS. You don't pay a cent extra for that data traffic when you have BIS enabled. Should there be an app that doesn't use BIS, the data usage of that app may cost extra but that's very rare.

Thanks for the clarification.
Does the BIS data get routed through a foreign server? The activesync app we use allows connection via BIS or WAP amoungst others. WAP flies, BIS takes ages and often times out.

Yes...the Blackberry server serving South Africa used to be in the UK....it has since been moved to Paris or somewhere in France.
