Hi All,

I have been having a frustrating fight with telkom the laste 22 days (that's how long this has been happening).

Anyways, at first I thought there was something wrong with my line, 'cauz it didn't want to connect, or so it seemed so we logged a complaint with telkom to come out and fix the line. A week back they pitch, on the weekend, when they KNOW it is a business call and there won't be anyone at the office.

SO yesterday the techie phones me to ask if I can be there, so I told him to come today, just after 12, and I'll be waiting for him...6 hours later and still no techie...wonderful service eh ;)

Anyways, so out of frustration I did some extra tests of my own, and it seems that my line is fine, only unable to browse anything else except telkom.co.za and saix.net...

I tested this teory with the Telkom Test account, and with an MWeb account...The IS account that we're supposed to use doesn't work, which shows me that you cannot get out of the telkom subnet...

Also, isn't telkom supposed to pick these type of faults up on their normal standard line tests?

Anyone else experiencing something like this, it's the first time i've heard of something like this...whee....

Are you inputting the user login details via the router interface or are you connecting via PPPOE ?

It would appear that the Telkom Test account details are somehow "hardcoded" on your setup - hence you're restricted to the Telkom subnet

hi Merrigan

I was experiencing the same problem.
I could only access saix and telkom website nothin else. I did contact Telkom and they said my ISP is at fault, I contacted my ISP and they said Telkom is at fault. so i phoned 0800 375 375 (Telkoms ADSL Support line) and the techie told me to log on to my netgear router, and said I should change the idle timeout setting ( Under basic settings if you using Netgear DG834GT) to 1 minute. and it worked, but my assumption is that, that wasnt the problem. I dont see how that could be a problem. but yes the problem did lie with Telkom someway, so phone 0800375375 and ask them whatsup!

Good Luck! :)

Hi all,

To Reply:

mitchmagi : No, I setup the Telkom Test Account on a PC that I use for all my testing purposes. I then Connect to it VIA PPPoE and a USB ADSL modem. I did this just to test to see if the line is working or what the matter might be...

vaco : No, I have a IS Uncapped Business account, so the router was setup, and sent to me ready and in working order. I also know the router is not at fault, as I have had it at a friends house the last two weeks, working there without a problem.

mas : That does not make sense, no. And I do not think that will help in this case, as I have said in my reply to vaco, The router works beautifully on all the other lines, for weeks on end, but not on that specific line. Also it doesn't matter wether I use the telkom guest account, or another MWEB account to test, both of them can ONLY view telkom.co.za and saix.net...so it is definitely a telkom error, and I think it is software...well that is my opinion...

Keep well!!

yip it def is a telkom error.

that was when i had my problem.
just call 0800375375 and tell them your problem.
that solved it for me. obvioudly chaning idle time to 1minute won't make a difference. the techie probably sorted it out while I was on fone and didnt want to admit it was a telkom fault! so blamed my idle time. :)

Hi Mas,

I will definitely hop on the phone first thing in the morning and hope to sort things out. I'm sure if they knew the correct problem, and that it's fixable from their side, it might just go better (yeah right)..

Anyways, thanks for the support, I'll keep this updated and tell you guys what happens.

Keep well ey! ;)

Just a Little update...

Hi all,

Just got off the phone with telscum techie.

I was on the phone with them for 40 minutes, and am really glad it is a toll-free number.

The silly techie continually questioned me about multiple accounts, and told me the problem had to lie with my ISP, while I told him that everything works perfectly fine with ALL other lines. He obviously didn't understand that.

I tested this line again today...and this morning everything was the same as yesterday..so I am seriously very down in the dumps...

they are unhelpful. even tho the problem lies with them.
the techie i spoke to was "denver" and he sorted it out for me.
i know its not easy to get hold of the same techie, but maybe u lucky. he seemd to have sense and brains in him! :)

Hi Mas,

Thank you for the help, I really appreciate it.

I spoke to telkom again after the last update. This time I really moaned until they could give me a solid answer. I can't remember to whom I spoke, but it was some kind of senior, senior technician's supervisor or something.

In any case, this auntie told me that she didn't know what the problem was, and went to ask HER superior. They then confirmed that I should have IS contact saix, and log an FQ card (or something of the sorts)...

Now this makes no sense to me that they suddenly blamed it on saix, but I'll follow the line and see what happens...

Anyways, thanks again for all the help, I will keep you updated on the situation.

Keep well!! :o

And Another Update....

Hi All...

This thread is beginning to feel like home :P

Anyways, so we phoned IS today, and got the to look at the problem, but it seems to me that the technicians are just as useless there as with telkom.

They test the router and the Router's IP Adress, and the more I tell them that is NOT our line it is connected on, the more they moan that there is nothing wrong...*sigh*

Anyway, the last person I spoke to eventually understood what I told him and got on the case. After speaking to him, I didn't have the willpower to worrie anything about the ADSL for the rest of the day, so I'll get onto the case as soon as possible tomorrow morning.

I have been thinking tho (took a disprin and the paint went away)...that it might just be quicker to get a new ADSL line installed and let them discontinue the one I'm struggling with now, than to get this one fixed eventually...

Night all, and keep well!! ;) ;)

And we have Joy!

So I phoned telkom again...out of pure frustration....

The helpdesk Dude kept on telling me that the problem was with my ISP, which by now we know was not the problem...but trying to get that message across was the hardest part..

Anyways, after getting him to understand that part of the issue he put's me on hold, with no music to listen to, and I ponder for 10 minutes if it's a good or a bad thing...

Anyways, after beginning to think that I have been cut off (again) he comes back and asks me to test the line now...I do and viola!

He confesses they set tome settings on the ports (or something of the sorts) and now it's working. I'll definitely monitor it for a few days before putting the whole company back onto that line..

Anyways, so now my problem is fixed, I wish I could remember the guy that helped me's name, so that I could thank him here.

Anyways, This was the best day in my history with telkom..EVER..

congratulations. :) im sure by now u know the telkom website in ur head!

LOL....

Yeah, that and saix. I cannot even remember how many times I have done the Telkom ADSL Speed test, and how many times I've disconnected and reconnected different accounts :P

Anyways, I'll test it for a couple of days now, and will keep you posted

Thanks for the support, you've been great ;)

Good news Merrigan. And much as I dislike saying it - this (to me) is a big plus of having telkom as isp... when there is an issue it is definitely their problem.

Yeah,

I know, and that is very true. The only reason I took IS, is for their uncapped business ADSL. We really need it at work, and that is why I took it. There are so many things that are dependant on that line, and one of them is my reputation :P

If it was any other reason, I would definitely have chosen a Telkom account, but they don't offer me what I want, OR even what I need.

Congrats, Merrigan! ;)

With Telkom, being insanely annoying seems to be the best option. Or maybe it's a case of finding a tech support guy who actually knows what he's doing.

Xarog...

I really think a combination is the best option...but to get that combination might be hard sometimes...
