No cash, no problem

I honestly dont see the need for car guards. On 3 occasions my door had a ding in it from someone opening their door into my car and then drove on. On 2 of the occasions the car guard said my car is all good till I pointed out why the ding, and suddenly they have to be somewhere else. They are honestly the most useless workers under the sun.

And then you must take your money out infront of them? Ive heard of some run away with the client's wallet.

And then helping you out of the parking space? We have 360 degree cameras, so honestly dont even need to look at them waving their hands, most of the times they are but human chicanes preventing you from going out.

But this article the guy is smoking dope. They are trying to enforce the American tipping culture the other day. I was at my cafe vide the other day and they handed me the machine asking for a tip between 15-35%. Just for asking them to make a R60 buck coffee for me.

I don't know how high your expectations are, but put yourself in their shoes. You're not going to see every ding happen across a rotating pool of 20 to 30 cars over 10? hours per day either. I'd argue that was never their responsibility. You chose to park around other people.

Yes it's annoying when they stand in your way, but on rare occasions they do stop someone reversing without checking or being able to see oncoming traffic.

You're not obliged to tip, but for those that occasionally want to, it's clear that cash no longer works.

Personally in a country where unemployment is so high, I can appreciate that they're trying something. And it can't be fun standing around for so long every day.

What are their responsibilities? What service(s) do they provide that you feel deserves payment for?

A lot of talk about going cashless in a country where only the top 10% are actually using digital solutions. The vast majority of the population is still strictly cash, and cash will remain King for many years to come. Car guards aren't changing over to digital, their masters are and they are being forced to go along with it or lose their jobs.

Great, now my 'I don't have change' plan is done for.

I think businesses under estimate how much business they lose due to car guards. I my case, they lose just about all my business (for what it's worth.) I'll drive further to shops/centers/malls that don't have them. Sometimes it's unavoidable though.

Some areas are insane, Due to various reasons I sometimes find myself in the Natal south coast, and the Vaal Triangle. Holy sheet, it's like it's the main source of employment there. The places are crawling with car guards. Even places with paid boom access parking have car guards.

Yeah screw that. If I order and collect at a counter, there will be no tip. At R60 a coffee there is plenty to go around to pay the people working there properly.

For sit down service I'll do 15% or so.
