No e-tolls: ANC Gauteng

"The current system is too expensive, traffic flows have been negatively affected. We would rather have a fuel levy," said Papo to applause from hundreds of delegates.

And there you have it folks....Be prepared to pay considerably more for fuel in future

Either way Joe Soap will get screwed...if it's not forced e-toll it will be forced high fuel levies

Fuel levy is fine...if it fund the road upgrades *only*.

Knowing the ANC they signed bullet proof contracts & now we're stuck with it though - much like those industrial power contracts they signed selling electricity for peanuts.

Agreed..but this e-toll nonsense should never have happened in the first place.....what happened to the funds that was intended for road maintenance and upgrades? Where is it?

Why was pension moneys used to finance E-toll?

Who in thor's name are the morons/criminals......running this country?

I was enjoying using the roads for free seems its coming to an end via fuel levies. Now all they need to do is take the R250 mil that zuma owes the people and pay some of that useless gantries.

We already have a fuel levy for roads. It's an administrative fiat to increase the levy. The problem now is that it goes to the general fiscus. As HavocXphere says, the issue is really ring-fencing the levy for roads. And managing it rationally and cleanly.

My question is if it wasn't for the elections then what? Is this move about the people's interests or ....?

Everyone involved in this white elephant needs to forfeit ALL their assets to the asset forfeiture unit and then spend the rest of their misbegotten lives in jail.

Good! The taxis and buses who use the roads to generate profit can pay for the upkeep of the road as well.
The taxi drivers and bosses avoid most income tax in any case so why must I as an income tax payer also subsidize the infrastructure they use? They're private transport companies after all.
Even a fuel levy of R1 per litre would be much cheaper than the e-tolls.
I fully support the user pays principle.
