Cape judge president John Hlophe has not yet given Justice Minister Enver Surty reasons why he should go back to work, Surty's spokesman said on Monday afternoon.

Hlophe, who asked for special leave in June last year amid a row over a complaint against him by Constitutional Court judges, returned to work last week, but left again after receiving a letter from Surty.

Hlophe has since publicly accused the minister of acting unlawfully, and has claimed Surty is trying to use the special leave as a device to "indefinitely sideline" him from executing his duties as a judge.

Of course there is an explanation. He has clearly run out of money and needs to arrange a few judge/trial combinations to maximise the consulting fees he earns from interested parties.

I don't know. Have you seen what this guy earns? He is sitting at home doing nothing earning big bucks! How can he run out of money?

Hmm - the big bucks he earns were clearly not enough. He had to moonlight as a special adviser to certain interest groups. And now that he has been sidelined his salary just doesn't meet his standard of living.

And who knows if the ANC doesn't have a little programme that takes part of the salary of those 'deployed' into important positions.
