No hot water

We had a brief loss of power today (nothing tripped), now come bath/shower time there is no hot water. Ive reset the mains, EL and dedicated geyser switches and still no hot water (4 hours later).

Thermostat and element was changed last year.

What gives?

I hope its not something bad like the ripple didn't get the "on" signal because the power was off ?

Perhaps they know this and usually send out an extra signal after load shedding... perhaps this time they forgot.

My ripple relay is out/ removed. I use my own timer.

You should get an electrician to bypass it. I wouldn't tolerate the municipality having control over my geyser.

I had a problem with ripple for years, my ripple would never come back on, city power used to send someone out to me every few days to switch it on manually but they eventually didn't bother... They weren't interested in testing it/replacing it. It would switch off every morning, but never come on again. Many cold showers over months. I gave up waiting for them to switch it on(they now somewhere between 5-7 years late) and switched it on daily myself for years. Last year had rewiring done and got it removed.

To be honest the water was always hot, mornings and evenings. So if this was the problem I woundnt mind them replacing it.


Also I do think the relay is working because:

1) The green light is flashing on the relay, indicating its on.

2) When I turn the geyser off on the DB I hear a click, so im pretty sure the relay is working.

Check if the thermostat is not stuck in the off position (simplest way is to turn the knob and listen for a click), if it clicks when going down and when going up the problem is the element.

Plumbers came, they said it was an Isolator, lets see if that was the problem.

I fiddled with the thermostat and turned the breaker and isolator on and off. Have hot water now

I remember Eskom came around at our place in Oudtshoorn to fit them. Declined and that was the end of that.
