Using Windows 7 - Home Basic, with a D-Link 2500U DSL modem, on a Afrihost 1G account with a 384k line from Telkom

When I put the user id and password into the connection and make the connection, the modem connects fine, with afrihost, but windows 7 says that there is no internet access in the network section. I can resolve ip address from a command prompt, but pings fail. The modem is set with VPI = 8, VCI = 35, PPPoE with LLC .

Anyone have any ideas how to solve this problem, please. My client is starting to look strange at me/:o

Could be the modem drivers.

What IP are you pinging though?

or your modem is stuffed, happened to me on Thursday just before I wanted to upgrade mu 2640's firmware to see if the wireless will work again. Had to buy a new modem/router to get back on the net.

Just remember that you have to have International cap left for Windows to say that you have an active Internet connection. I find it very stupid that Windows has to contact the Microsoft site to detect the Internet connection.

What you can do instead, is to run: "ping www.aardvark.co.za -t" (without the quotes)
If you get a response from that, then your Internet is working.

The DSL-2500U is quite a nice ADSL modem. Just update the firmware from the Russian FTP (official D-Link) site.

Mutter mutter, it's always this way, when one asks for advise, folks are very helpfull, except that one has already done all the things that they suggest, and replying like this puts peoples backs up and they think, well to hell with him anyway. Seriously, thanks for the suggestions, but done that and got the t-shirt, still no browsing. In other words, new uncapped ISP account, DSL modem works fine on another DSL line/PC setup. Will soldier on this morning with this.

Something similar happened to me. When you open up the network and sharing centre, does it show 2 networks, one private and one public? I had my network IP address set to auto (didnt try manual settings though) and it would refuse to see a internet connection even though I was able to update my routers firmware just minutes before. I then deleted every network windows had automatically connected (after unplugging network cable), plugged the cable back in and windows was happy. Just another thing to try, hope it works.

First try resetting the router to factory defaults, then try putting the router in bridge mode and dialling out from windows.

hi just noticed the problem. What antivirus is on the pc? could it be that its blocking incomming connections? There is a few thing I can think of. But to be honest in my opinion if the line syncs ok it can only be the cable or the router.

run the windows 7 network connection diag and tell us what it says there.

are u putting the username/password in a Windows 7 Network connection or in the admin site of the DSL router?

if it's on the Windows 7 side, then the DSL router must be in a bridged mode to allow the connection to be made with Win7. otherwise if in the admin side of the router, there should be confirmation that the connection is up and working.

Your problem is so so clear - You are running windoze :P

Maybe try put the modem in bridge mode and create a PPPoE connection in windoze itself? See if that works.

Maybe - novel concept - mention the steps you took to diagnose beforehand ;)

Anyhoo to start:
Ping 66.102.7.105
Ping 196.35.20.131
Ping 196.38.88.28

1) International
2) Local
3) Afrihost traffic only

Results please
