I am trying to get a static IP on my pc's. I've followed the ffg steps:

"a. Go to Network Connections
b. Double click on the connection
c. Click on properties
d. Double click on - Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and fill up the IP address as you have noted them down above.
e. Click on OK for all dialogue boxes."
On my laptop (Win 8) when I change to static IP, I am connected to the network but can't access internet.

Am I doing something wrong?

Need to set dns addresses and default gateway too. And addresses need to be on the same subnet as your router's ethernet port.

I might be way off here, but shouldnt this be activated by your ISP as well, seeing that a static IP is an extra cost option?

I definitely filled in subnet mask and default gateway not sure about DNS. Maybe that's the problem- will check when I get home.
Thanks

@Gerhardva- I dunno about this but I don't think so cos it's on the local network only? Am I wrong?

Default gateway your router, make sure your ip address is same range as your router's internal ip.
pop 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 into primary and secondary dns.
99% chance it will work.

Sounds like your gateway setting is wrong.

Try the following:
on one of the machines, set IPV4 to automatic

look at the settings assigned to the port, one way is via cmd screen, run ipconfig /all and look for the port used to connect to adsl and note gateway and dns settings

Go back to ipv4 settings and use the ip address you require and use the gateway and dns settings noted above. Also make sure that the first three dot settings are the same as those for the gateway e.g. 192.168.0.??? use 192.168.0

Repeat for all the other pc's.

Why do you want a static IP?

why do you want static ips' ??

I wanted to share a folder with my android device but ever time I turn my pc off I get another IP.
I was advised to get a static IP.
I dunno much about networking stuff.

Just create permanent IP address allocations in your router's DHCP config. Much easier.

Maybe much easier to use free cloud storage such as offered by dropbox, google microsoft. These are all accessible from android & pc, and leave all ip 's as auto.

This. I did it on my Smoothwall for my fondleslab, phone and laptop, so that I know they always will get the same IP.

Rest I'm not worried about.

This
On the router, all you need is the MAC address for the device and then the IP you want to give it. Every time it comes online, the router will issue it the same IP. Just make sure it is not an IP that will get automatically issued to another device...
