I have windows 2003 server network, with a telkom adsl router connected to my lan, I think I have configured my pat settings correctly and I have also looked at bridging options. I am trying to connect remotely to a pc on my lan behind the router. I have recognized the issue with static and dynamic ip addresses and to over come it i downloaded no-ip and registered with them. My problem is the no-ip seems to have a different internet ip to that of the actual routers interent ip. No-ip is updating, as i can ping the *.no-ip.* address. But try as I might I get no joy from Remote Desktop. I ve been over and over the router config and I am sure that IT is set up correctly. PPPoe of Ethernet, Pat is set to the Ip on the particular lan pc I want Access to, and as far as i can see everything is working perfectly except for the fact that rdp wont find that particular host,(I do use the NO-IP address to connect to dont I ????) my lan pc still has access to my mail server and internet with no probs. PLEASE HELP I am going insane and I have read through almost every post looking for some clue as to where I am going wrong but to no avail again Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This isn't an answer but a question: What are you trying to do here? Are you attempting to make your pc visible through a proxy fixed IP address on the net while using telkom's adsl? If so please could you post the link to no-ip because i'm interested in doing just that.

Thanks

i've just been looking at no-ip.com and it looks like a useful product but i don't think that's your problem. all that no-ip does is map a name to an ip to save you having to type in an ip address (and optionally remaps the ip address to the name when your ip changes). a useful product but your problem sounds like it's a permission thing. you probably have a built in firewall in the router and/or os which is preventing you from accessing your pc from outside your router. you can test this by finding your ip address at whatismyip.com and then just trying to access your pc using http//x.x.x.x from whatismyip.com. you don't need no-ip.com yet - only once you've got it working. i'm having the same problem at the moment and am also trying to battle through it. i'll post more info if i find a solution.

Thanks for the reply, to clear some things up. I am trying to access the pc remotely using RDP. The error message I get from RDP is "The Client could not connect to the Remote Computer". The Pc does not have any firewall software on it, possibly on the telkom router??? I do not know how to check that but it does not appear to say anything about Firewalls at all. I will have to give what you said a try still. Will reply when I have tried it.

 hmm, I found out what the Internet Ip is from whatismyip.com and tried to connect to it, I still recieve the same "The Client could not connect to the remote computer" message. I have also tried the Ip with the port number I allocated on the router. I can ping the IP with an adequate response and tracert it but it does timeout one the first attempt and then continues fine. Maybe if someone could give me the exact steps at the router config level it would help? I cant seem to figure this out!

I had to scrap No-ip and have used Dyndns, No Ip for some reason was updating the with the wrong IP address ???? who knows why  Anyway I rechecked my PAT settings and connected everything works like a bomb. Stoke!
