I ordered a Telkom ADSL line early October 2007 for the new appartment I was moving into 1st November 2007. After the usual wait of several weeks in late November the technition was there only to find out that the complex has no infrastructure for telephone lines. So we figured out that the Telkom lines stop right outside the complex gate. There are manholes and pipes in the ground throughout the complex and cables from inside the appartments down to the ground pannel outside each unit but no cables from there to the Telkom box outside.
So after this order was converted to a cabling project order and then canceled because Telkom figured I probably don't want the line anymore, it was opened again in February and finally after phoning twice a week I managed to get an installation date from them. October 2008.
I still phones about once a week after that to try and get things escalated and ruched a bit but with no luck. October 2008 was the best they could do. So I stopped bugging them for a while, making my peace with having no connection at home. I even had iBurst for a few months but canceled that because a pigeon with a broken wing delivers better service than they do.
I phoned this afternoon to find out if October is still the best they could do and how things are going to work because they might need to speak to someone on the body corporate of the company to get an installation like that arranged. Seeing that I am that person I figured I would start finding out what we are going to need.
So with not that much of a surprise the consultant tells me that there is no date for this installation and that it wold be looked into from time to time. Ofc. nothing is gonna change if they keep looking but don't actualy do anything.
So after this tale of horror and no internet for such a long time my questions are: Is there some service provider that would install the last 50m of cable between the Telkom box and my home. How much does this cost? Does Telkom care if it was done inside a complex by someone not contracted by them? Basically, is there any way that I can get fixed line ADSL without waiting to infinity for Telkom to wake up?
I don't have Telkom WiMax coverage but I'll accept a WiMax solution from another provider if it was available. I use to game online (World of Warcraft for a endgame raiding guild) but I don't even care about the latency that mush anymore. My wife is tarting to work from home and will need a connection that is better than the ridiculous offering iBurst tried to pass off as service. Any constructive feedback will be welcomed.
