No more EA FIFA games

FIFA, one of the most popular video game franchises, will be renamed EA Sports FC after the game’s publisher, Electronic Arts Inc., failed to reach a new licensing agreement with the world soccer governing body of the same name.

Chief Executive Officer Andrew Wilson said he was “thankful for our many years of great partnership” with FIFA and that the final game in the franchise will be released this year.

The new series will retain licensing agreements with more than 300 of EA’s partners, allowing future games to continue featuring most global soccer players, teams and stadiums.

The kings of clickbait titles strike again...
 
Miss the good old days when they were able to crack it, and I would play career mode for months. Never found myself into ultimate teams on the couple of times I bought it.

FIFA 12 was the last one I was able to get a crack for. I remember taking Chester from League 2 to win the Premier League and eventually Champions League.

Was a real mind fark to see about half my starting 11 pick up the Prem IRL with Leicester a couple years later.

The game sales are a only few million, but for example in 2020 EA was reported to have made more than $1.62 billion from FUT. If you're not familiar with FUT, that's a yearly thing where you start with a fresh team and have to play to earn better players.

But of course they also sell card packs which is what makes the money. Famous streamers will spend $10k+ easy because they can make it back from streaming, but then normal guys are watching that and also want to play, so everyone keeps on buying packs. Then next year it resets and everyone starts over again...
 
While I'm sure Fifa is being greedy...this is the worst name change ever...

True, but it may also mean that they cannot use trademarked competition names in the game, for example anything World Cup-related as that is FIFA property. If that is something you care for.

Anyway, I haven't purchased an EA sports game in years now as you pay a small fortune what amounts to little more than team/player updates. Pay R1,000 so you have Ronaldo at United in FIFA 22 when you can just as well play FIFA 20 and download a user-created mod that updates transfers as accurately as possible.

Then FIFA are being greedy. I thought their naming rights included some of the lesser known players but I see players are separate presumably in their own individual deals with EA.
 
I'm just waiting for FIFA 22 to get to a reasonable price on sale before buying. Am playing FIFA 21 on EA Play, for now, hoped there would be a sale for this by now.
But nope, only 22. And I'm sure as hell not paying R1000 for a ****ing soccer game.

Also, when will EA Sports release another rugby game? Like Rugby 08, the best rugby game of all time.
