A friend of mine is travelling to Malaysia via Hong Kong and would dearly like to be able to use his GPS on the Bold 9700 - surely there must be some software out there that allows offline gps navigation? BIS is a little expensive to roam with.

Only other 1 i know of is Garmap and it will cost about R600 to buy and still needs data to download the maps, he better off buying a Garmin or TomTom as its been a long time since a saw a mobile phone where all maps were installed to.

All of Nokia's Symbian phones with GPS use the installed map principle. Navigation is free too on the recent ones.(and some of the old)

Which doesn't help the OP's friend much, but it's one of the main reasons why I'll stick with Nokia for the foreseeable future.

Even if he had a nokia still would not help as they don't load global maps so the problems the same at days end. i had winmob before my berry and Garmin was fully loaded, but only South African maps were provided there too, he would still have to buy maps for any visiting country.

The problem isn't so much buying the maps or even buying the software - it's that there doesn't seem to be any software out there that actually does what is needed:

1) Ability to navigate while NOT connected to any cell or wifi network
2) Maps that are stored on the device as opposed to anywhere else

I have sorted out CoPilot for my Galaxy S and that works perfectly with offline maps so why on earth is there nothing for blackberry that does this? Sure, BIS is great and all but it's not so wonderful if you have to roam with it.

edit: There do appear to be two possible solutions. Trekbuddy and WeTravel - both of which I'm uncertain of the quality though. Could be good, could be dodgy. Downside? You have to generate your own maps.

Be that as it may, all his friend needs is Nokia Map Loader on his PC, then he can install any map he requires to his device. All the maps are free of charge as far as I know.

True except for one small problem. It's a Blackberry 9700 so Nokia Maps won't really help much :D
