No permission to restart computer??

Hi there, I wonder if anyone on this forum can help.
I have a fairly old Acer lappie (Windows XP Pro with required patches, Avira antivirus, Malwarebytes antimalaware, Comodo firewall) which has been working fine, up until a week ago.
This may be unrelated but about the time the problems started I had downloaded something called Mozbackup to move emails and bookmarks to a new lappie. (I downloaded it from Sourceforge which is meant to be virus free as far as I know??).
Malwarebytes did pick up a problem on my next scan (supposedly fixed) but I am still having some strange issues:
I cannot cut and paste files, or copy and paste files, (system does nothing) but I CAN move files using the Edit menu at the top of the application.
I also cannot shut down / restart the system through Start >> restart - I get a message saying I do not have the necessary permissions (but I am the only user on the laptop and I certainly didn't just change my own permissions!)

Any helpful suggestions would be welcomed (except maybe one that says "hit format" because I only have a service pack 2 disk so to catch up with all the patches would kill my data allocation x 5!!!)

By the way the new laptop I was going to transfer the files to has been returned to IC because I hated the keyboard and mouse, so I have to make my old beast work a bit longer - until I find a new machine I like...

cant you do a system restore to the last save point- sounds like some of your system files have been corrupted

May be a good call - been a while since I made a restore point though - could I be opening myself up to additional problems since I have added/ removed/ moved files since then?
Worth a try - will let you know!

Didn't work unfortunately.
Another thing its doing that I didn't mention in the first post is that programs under Start >> All Programs are not clickable - ie if I point to Acessories, no submenu comes up, and clicking on any item in the list just makes the whole menu deselect (back to desktop view).

In the end, the only problem MSE found was on a file downloaded after the problems started, so that wasn't my problem; last night more by accident than anything else I discovered that something I must have inadvertently changed on my firewall may have been the issue - I saw that a lot of explorer.exe related items were being blocked by one part of Comodo (Defense+).
So I have uninstalled and then re-installed the firewall and all seems fine!
