Has Sony gone mad? Prominent adult movie producer Digital Playground (site) says it is forced to use HD DVD instead of Blu-ray, because Sony does not allow XXX-rated movies to be released on Blu-ray.

It does not matter how you stand to porn. It is here and it is a massive business. It is also an industry that is an early adopter for new media technology. VHS might not have won with out the adult film industry adopting it.

German Heise has interviewed Joone the founder of Digital Playgrounds at the AVN 2007 show in Las Vegas. Joone says actually said last year he is committed to Blu-ray. Now they announced four HD DVD titles in the United States. In the interview Joone says he was forced to use HD DVD, because no Blu-ray disc manufacturer would make his discs, because Sony was against it and they would loose their license.

If this holds true, Blu-ray is at a major disadvantage and could fail.

is this the end of blue ray?? :D

I have heard the rumour before so this just compounds it...

I for one am buying neither for a long long time.

There can be only one

Could there not be a situation like DVD+ and DVD- where hardware manufacturers will be forced to support both technologies. It would even benifit the consumer if you have a HD/+/-/RAM DVD drive that also supports Blu Ray?

Really stupid move by sony it's a huge market they turning away. I think LG/Samsung announced a few weeks ago that they will be releasing a combined player seems like this might be the way the industry will be going.

an update to compound the point. HD-DVD has won!!

Adult-Film Director Talks Blu-Ray

There has been a lot of speculation lately on the electro-webs about the HD-DVD war currently brewing between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray.

The closest analogy is the '80s battle between VHS and Betamax. The conventional wisdom is that Beta lost that format war by refusing to allow pronographic movies on its tapes. So many feel that the format of choice among the pornography industry will decide the fate of next-gen DVD.

We caught up with director Robby D. at the Adult Entertainment Expo. Robby shoots first-rate pornography for high-end adult-movie company Digital Playground.

Here's what Mr. D. had to say about why his company is going HD-DVD and not Blu-Ray:

sony always shoot them selves in the foot.

when they first released mp3 players it was their own version of mp3 which did essentially only worked on another sony product.

we all know the story around sony music and movies

sony are an archaic gaint using philosophies that are dying very quickly due to the new generation taking hold of the reigns world wide.

sony in short are stupid and deserve to collapse which i think is inevitable if they carry on with their 1980 business strategy and ideology.

Only problem is apparently the HD-DVD encryption have been cracked this week by some by some of the people on doom9...studios might pull suport in favor of blu-ray...
