Where can one grab an MTN prepaid modem? The MTN shops can provide modems on contract only...as a regular in this forums i can't touch any MTN data contract at the moment...i managed to get one from vodashop but its not accepting the MTN sim...

The modem has VC's software settings. Have you had them changed to MTN? If not phone them for the settings. Otherwise try setting your APN as "myMTN" and the dialing number as *99# and leave password and name blank.

I don't this will work though as I see mine has MTN written all over the driver.

thanx marco im buzy trying that...but is there any good reason why mtn is not selling prpaid modems

Not sure why they're not selling prepaid modems, but there's no reason an MTN simcard wouldn't work on a Vodacom/Vodafone modem, they're not network locked.

cna sells the E156 (3,6 MB) for R699 I think.

check them out, it's prepaid.

True, they aren't network locked, but the Vodafone Mobile Connect software detects the network and automatically configures the APN, etc. Of course it doesn't know about the MTN network.

Try MDMA or download Huawei Mobile Partner directly from Huawei's website.

I also use the VC modem with any other networks's sim I can lay my hands on here and abroad.
Look at Mobile Partner software, works like a charm. Just don't install th VC software on the modem.

Why MTN is not selling modems pre-paid? Have the thought crossed your mind that they just might be utterly INCOMPETENT? And best thing you did is NOT to contract with them. Prepaid is the best solution.

still can't connect...error-searching for netwk 4ever. I' l just stick with voda

Anyone who gets a contract is mad. There's absolutely no financial incentive to get a contract whatsover, the prepaid data bundles cost exactly the same for prepaid and contract.

You forgot to say that if you on contract, you will be over billed by big megabucks as the data counter is veeeeery slow to update.
Prepaid is the way to go. Updates in real time.

I switch my Huawei E220 modem happily between MTN and Voda, often several times a day depending on signal strength etc. Never been a problem -- as long as you ditch the original software and reload Huawei's Mobile Partner software, which is far superior. Shouldn't make any difference whether the modem was supplied by VC, MTN or indeed Telkom.

You could also use ggings' excellent MDMA software instead, though last time I looked the interface was unusable on a small netbook screen (not deep enough for the interface unless you mess with special software to enable scrolling off the screen). And you will still need to install actual drivers for the modem.
