No proper gear, no fires put out

Johannesburg - More than 100 firefighters employed by the Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (JEMS) have not put out fires since they were employed five months ago as they don’t have the required gear.

They were employed in February after undergoing extensive training. However, due to the lack of protective clothing, all they have been doing is driving ambulances and responding to medical calls.

And forgot to equip the emergency services.

Oh well, at least now the residents are fit and healthy and able to get themselves out of a burning building..

Sources within JEMS said the only thing the employees were issued with was a black and white uniform instead of the usual blue overalls that paramedics wear when they do ambulance duty.

Sheesh ... theres an odd statement.

Fire fighters should be wearing inherently FR garments

Station gear is typically Nomex / Kermel / Protal 160 to 180g
The actual fire kit is typically same as above or PBI 280g plus with liner

All of these are usually regulated by the municipality and should be expected to be either ISo standard or NFPA standard.

The kit for paramedics is normally a cotton or poly / cotton drill - these may be flame retard treated, but are not considered as being safe for ever - wash dependent.

I suppose they could contact SAESI ....

I have a feeling these particular firefighters mentioned in the article would be demanding millionz from the city at the first sign of a slight scalding ....
