No SMS or Data on new Desire S

Hi

I bought a new Desire S from MTN on TopUp 99 today (new SIM and number and I received an SMS to confirm RICA success). This is my first experience with MTN and Android, so I don't know whether I've neglected to set up something correctly.

I can make and receives calls. Can also SMS, but the messages never get delivered. I can connect the data connection (mymtn and internet APNs), but don't get any data throughput. I do have airtime, as well as free SMSs, but no bundled data.

I've tried phoning 808 about ten times now and every time I get to an operator, the call promptly drops.

What gives?

For the love of all that is holy, MTN customer service is unhelpful! The store didn't have time to set up my phone and check that everything is working and 808 just tells me to go to the store, because they will only help me if they can speak to the contract holder (my father). But they can't. He's deaf. And the only reason why he had to take out the contract is because a R60 000 p.a. bursary apparently doesn't count as sufficient income for a R89x24 contract.
