No such thing as a static ip in SA

A Telkom salesman has told me that there is no such thing as an ADSL static IP and that any so-called static IP accounts are merely rerouting trickery performed by the ISP.

Is this true?
 
Yup. IS have static IP's on there fibre lines (you get 4 in fact) but you have to use the cCisco router they supply and you cant go into the management console. They do some very clever routing to do that.
 
Technically his is correct. All Telkoms ESR's issue n dynamic IP when you logon. The ISP's then provide you with a static IP over a VPN connection (L2TP). That is the reason most ISP's make you buy a modem/router from them for the Uncapped/ Static IP's.

WTF?? The uncapped products form IS is quite reasonably priced. <R2K for 512kbps... and you get 5 static IP's. Does is really matter how they route the traffic to you? It is totally irrelevant, unless it causes problems!

Most ISP's perform "trickery"... they shape your traffic, force it through transparent proxies, cache your dns queries and route your traffic via multiple links. what makes this so special?
 
2k for 512kb... you think thats "reasonably priced"? W0rd... what has this country come to where we think 2k for a 512 connection (kinda uncapped... because its not true uncapped).. is good. Added to that the bad IS peering, and international latency...

Not that I am knocking IS, cause its all much about the same with all the providers, but there is NOTHING good about that price other than it may be cheaper than some of local competitors (which means nothing).
 
doesn't sound like the service is comparable to diginet, but a 512kbps diginet connection would set you back something like... R15-20k?

it is much cheaper than it was a few years back.
 
IS Capped 5GB, Cisco router, 4 fixed ip's @ R500p/m excl. vat on contract with R1500 initial. No line speed limit.
Don't that's too badly priced in our current local market.
 
Telkom are the masters of trickery, so they should know it when they see it.

Still, I can't understand why it's a problem in itself if your traffic is routed. As long as the proxies are transparent...

DO you know what model version Cisco they give you ( you have to buy)

Do you get the passwords / can configure yourself :confused:

Yes 2000 for uncapped. Jesus Christ. I saw the other guys in USA complaining cause their service provider shapped them from 16mbs to 8mbs cause they where using too much bandwidth. WTF? They get it for like the same price as a loaf of bread. And this guys from UK tells me his internet is kinda pricey and it 20mbs cable at 30Euro WTF. I can just like really shoot myself now!
 
the isps had to resort to this crap even IS based because of telkoms being the only dsl provider but with new dsl providers coming up everyone will have to drop their prices on all packages they offer , and since the 2010 is being hosted here im sure we should have cheaper stuff buy then and i remember telkom or neotel well 1 of them saying that 10mbps will be available buy then just got to sit and wait
 
Why is it that, in other countries you can buy a static IP broadband solution, largely uncapped, for a fraction of the cost of what telkom can provide?

I mean, is there any other reason for deliberately reassigning your IP at set intervals (other than to have another opportunity to indulge in a bit of Olympic Gouging)?

In the UK I was on a static IP, with more or less unlimited bandwidth, for about 20 quid a month. That was 6 years ago; I would guess that the price has fallen considerably since then.

And yet we are supposed to be grateful for the scraps which Telkom feed us.
